On the referring page, there is this block of text:

Calculations:
soap in parts per million=
(ml of .o1N HCL solution)/weight of sample*30.44

residual catalyst in parts per million=
(ml of .01N HCl)/weight of sample*561

I'm having a difficult time understanding how the same test can measure two different chemicals just by changing the denomenator in the formula. Can someone help me out here?

For one thing, Dr. van Gerpen's article discusses using two different indicators for these two different measurements:

"The
basic procedure consists of titrating a sample of the phase to be analyzed, such as
glycerol, ester, wash water, etc., with a 0.1 N solution of HCl to the phenolphthalein end
point. This gives an estimate of the amount of catalyst. Then, a few drops of
bromophenol blue indicator are added and the titration continued to the color change for
that indicator. This gives an indication of the amount of soap."

That makes sense...but did I miss something on GM's page?
