I'm looking into getting a pickup truck I can travel in. 3/4 to one ton chassis.
I have one in mind and will mention it later in the thread.

I'm looking to see this truck mentioned repeatedly on my thread.

So, what's the best beast for my burden?

My fuel is on spec if not close to it, btw.

Ok, start braggin',
Brian

Nearly a year and 10K miles. Around B50 in the coldest winter months, B100 when 60F and up.

Thanks for replies.

I'm leaning to convert over to the Ford side.
They say you can run anything thru the 7.3 PSD.
I particularly hear '90's models mentioned.

I found a 97 7.3 Turbo 2wd dually. Pretty clean. Not perfect.
It has alot more cab space than my Chevy regular cab.
That is what I need, too.

Here is what it looks like;

It has a cracked windshield and no tailgate. 6 bad tires.
Power windows/ac, gooseneck hitch.
146k miles
Standard shift- looks my M465 from my other Chevy- lo geared.
Is it worth $4500 he's asking?
I know they still book high, but bluebook means nothing to me in a private sale.

If not, I found an '00 7.3 4x4 with SRW with many mods for $11,500, but I'd need a loan to get it.

The 7.3 turbo diesel was pretty much the same engine until they stopped putting them into pickups in the middle of 03, how many miles on the 00?

Has anyone heard of potential problems with biodiesel? I heard a study concluded that it is great until it mixes with the atmosphere and it creates a harmful byproduct. Maybe this is just Big Oil trying to spread misinformation?

Yeah, depends on the miles on the '00. Did you check the '97 underneath? Looks kinda' salty. But spend a couple or so grand on tires, windshield, fluids, and other needed maintanence, and for less than what, $7,500 ? You could have a pretty worthy, low mileage rig.

My opinion depends on what your needs are. The '97 will be a far greater tow machine than the '00.

On both, a quick indicator of overall engine condition is to pull off the intake hose from the filter, take a flashlight and peer down at the turbo vanes. If the vanes are dusted or chipped, chances are it wasn't taken care of very well and there's further damage and wear on the rest of the engine after the turbo.

Until what mixes with the atmosphere? The exaust? If so it's bull**it, made up by somebody who has not the slightest idea of WTF they are blathering about.

Ya,
I got to thinking.
If I'm gonna get a third truck, It would be more newer like the '00.
And I was mistaken about the price. He's asking $13,500.
The truck is nice, too.
http://picasaweb.google.com/hemiman74/MyTruck#

It's on craigslist. I bluebooked it and it booked for $13,500.
My lender would probly go 70% of book.
The only thing that expensive I've owned was my Harley Davidson.
I want some class for once in a truck.
I gots work trucks.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going the ford route.
Odd having 3 Chevys in the yard.

But check that truck out!

Almost. Mine is a crewcab, but the rest is fundamentally the same. Mine is a Lariat with off road package (Leather, alloy wheels, skid plates) In my region, $13,500 for that is a decent deal.(Provided it checks out ok mechanically) Not sure about other parts of the country though.

Awesome engine that loves biodiesel and has great driveability day to day, yet has the chassis and drivetrain that could pull a house off its foundation. Of the four vehicles in our household, I prefer to drive the Superduty. Never ceases to amaze me this is a nearly 8,000# vehicle.

Good to know.
Is the 'Lariat' the luxury model?

I'd like to have the newer model, old Fords look so boxy to me.
Do the PSDs use the DPF in later years?
'Been reading a little on that.

My Chevy has so far been pretty problem free on ~B30~ish.
Just some fuel filters. 3 in 3 months. It has one filter besides
the tank sock. It's been ok since then.

I joined the ford enthusiast forum so I can learn about mods and issue fixes
the 7.3 may need. It dosent seem to have nearly as many factory issues as the
GM 6.5. (PMD location, wiper circuit board, wastegate, CAI cone filter, oil filter location
and a weak IFS front end) Next I'm losing the catalytic converter and opening the exhaust to hear
the turbo and gain power/mpg.

Speaking of mpg, not that it's an issue using my own fuel, but how do the 7.3s fare on fuel?
I think I get 16-18 mpg on big rubber-33"x12".

It's hard enuff converting to Ford from only ever having GM, let alone going into it ignorantly.
None of my friends have a diesel. I appreciate y'all's time and advise.

Yep, lariat has the top of the line trim.

'Been reading a little on that.

I believe the DPF BS came out in 07

The PSD will burn B100 without a hiccup, one big thing about the 7.3 is the fuel filter is right on the top front of the engine, very easy access, and no priming after the change.

The Diesel Stop is another very good site.

The 7.3 will be in the same range, if you tow you will get 13-15

We have a 2001 Ford 7.3 at our recycling company that we have run B100 since it was new. It now has 111,000 B100 miles and the only fuel related issue was the replacement of one of the injectors about 5000 miles ago. Not really a big fan of Ford in general because of how they treated us on our 2004, but I'm impressed with the 7.3.
