Yes, the media will flow through an improperly sized screen like sand through an hourglass.

Just a quick note- we have used 80 mesh screen or higher successfully.

What kind of towers did you acquire?
If you can do an upflow, you will only need to make sure the resin will no escape from the top of the tower. You may need to only add another screen there. I think Arbor Biodiesel has 80 mesh screens for sale. You just need to figure out how many you need. |

Mine are 70 mesh and work perfectly. McMaster Carr page 387 has 80 mesh wire cloth. If in doubt use two layers counter set so that the holes don't line up.

The McMaster Carr stuff is relatively inespensive. I use their 80 mesh screen supported on a 20 mesh screen, in turn supported on a 1/4 inch plate with perforated holes. The "screen sandwich" works great and is not too expensive. |

I'm using an upflow design. I was just going to order the 80 mesh from arbor. I think I can just cut it to the correct shape, and re-assemble the unit. Should work well.
