Just got about a 5 gal bucket full of Koa shavings from my friends wood shop. Got some real soapy biodiesel to try with it.

I thought I would try this and post the results. I used an old water filter housing and filled it with some walnut shavings. The bio had the gly removed but still had the methanol in it. The sample on the right was passed through the shavings one time at a flow of 1 liter per min. The left sample is just raw bd. Both had about 50% water added and shaken two times each. I am happy with the results so far and I am going to make a better tower.

beggining to look as various hardwoods will work to a useful extent.

I did read something about tyloses formation being different in red oak than other oaks that might mean it is better than other woods though.

firstly hello, first day as a member (in fact its the first time I've been on this site) Smile.

interested in this topic as I bought an ecopure tower etc as initially thought it was the bees knees. I'm now having second thoughts although it could be a simple case of the ecopure media is now due for replacement. I will endeavour to do this over the next week or two comfirm my results.

I haven't used eco2pure, but the wood shavings work great and you can't beat the price.

Any idea how many gallons could be run through a column of chips, ~20lbs, before they had to be replaced?

another thought - could you mix tree species chips? If you obtain chips from a furniture maker you might end up with a mix of stuff.

Took me awhile but here it is. Koa wood shavings from a planner on some biodiesel. No water used to wash the batch did not even treat the shavings.

Yay for Paul. First in the world to use Koa wood shavings to clean biodiesel. Water looks clean and soap free, bio looks wet as could be expected after a shake em up test.

Hi Paul, good results but I have to say your shake up test doesnt look thorough enough, judging from the BD layer - it should be much cloudier. You have to shake up a second time or even third time after the water has settled, and it has to be really vigorous. It's better if the water is hot too. I use an electric whisk. It's only then that clean water counts.

With all the new people looking at wood as a filtering medium, I thought maybe this thread deserved a bump. Razz
