Or any acid solution, for that matter. It seems to work quicker, requires less, and doesn't reintroduce a bunch of stuff that you DON'T want in the fuel.

Of course, it's not quite as "available" as glycerin, I'll give you that.

If using acid to break an emulsion when washing biodiesel, remember that the action of the acid is to turn any soaps into Free Fatty Acids.

I do not make biodiesel, I prefer to use the oils (including FFA) as my fuel, in my 2 tank UCO conversion.

"Fatmobile 3" '84 MB300D Silver/Grey with dark blue interior. 290kkm My car - 2 tank UCO conversion working well. 22 000 km so far on UCO
"Josephine" '82 MB300D White with Palamino MBtex interior. 385kkm Wife's car. 20 000km on UCO blends.
"Elizabeth" '81 MB 280E Good body now re-engined as a 300D with the engine from the '79 300D.70 litre UCO tank, 2 pollacks switch FP, filters and IP between Start and UCO tanks.

'79 300D poor body (donor & parts)

"Fatmobile 2" '80 MB300D White with dark Blue interior 230kkm (My first MB) - 5000 km on biodiesel / UCO blend - Found new owner (Sold in 2004).
"Fatmobile" a '90 Mazda 2 litre diesel on UCO with biodiesel start/purge. - SOLD in Dec 2003 after 40 000km on UCO.

So if the action is to turn soaps into FFA, would it be wise to retransterfy the mix? I understand that FFA's are bad for injectors and pumps, so what would one do to insure that they were eliminated or converted? Would they be caught in subsequent washes?

Amazing how something so simple can be so easily overlooked.

if you retransesterify you're just making soap again, and it's hard to control the reprocess to keep from making even 'more' soap.

also, FFA does not wash out. INdustrially, in various other kinds of vegetable oil chemical processes, I think they take care of the FFA by making soap with them by neutralising with lye- so you've got either FFA in your fuel or soap to wash out, and not making the FFA in the first place is a lot easier.
