I just bought a 1985 ford escort diesel , the guy I bought it from said he had to pull start it to get it going , could it just be the fuel pump or something else , if anyone has answers let me know thanks.
I don't know about escorts. Look at the exhaust, if you can't see any there is no fuel to the motor. If the smoke is white, there is fuel, but no heat and your glow plugs are not working, or at least not enough of them.
If it has to be towed it is leaking air and letting the fuel run backwards out of the motor when its parked, or the glow plugs don't work. The glow polugs are electric, its usually pretty basic.
Best of luck
