Quite possibly the mechanical fuel pump leaking- They generally wear out at around 250-300,000 km. remove the cover and with engine running look for drips, wetness around fuel pump and all hoses, filter cap-
I have a '96 F350 PS - and had same situation. Cheers! SUB |

bi627,
I had the exact same issue on my 02 and it turned out to be the "dump valve" located on the fuel filter housing. Not sure if your 96 is the same so good luck. |

A 2002 7.3L psd is not the same as a 96. 96 Still had a mechanical fuel pump. 2002 Has and electronic fuel pump under the drivers door on the frame rail.

Ford cet tech -> True, but they both have the drain valve on the fuel filter that Jim Smetona is talking about.
Jim Smetona -> A leak from the fuel filter drain valve would not get the valley wet, IIRC. -Jim |

Just to clarify what I encountered, on my 02' the "flush valve" itself was not leaking. It was where the valve attached to the filter housing. It seems the o-rings went bad and on my particular motor it made the valley between the heads saturated with fuel until it flowed out the back of the engine where the bellhousing attached. Just my experience which is limited to my vehicle only. |

I have a 96 PS that I purchased just over a year ago. It has always had just a slight "drip" of fuel from a small pan just back of the oil pan. The truck has been running great and has given no problems. It only has 163,000 miles on it and is, or so I felt in great shape. Yesterday it was running great and just as I pulled into my driveway from a small trip into town I smelled diesel fuel. I pulled in and began to back into my space and noticed my truck was pouring diesel from that same spot just behind the oil pan. I immediately shut it down and the fuel leaked slowed down considerably but still dripped for about an hour. I would guess it "dumped" around 1-2 gallons of fuel within just a matter of a couple of minutes. Once it sat for a few minutes without running the leak stopped. It was dark so I have not even looked under the hood but thought I would put out feelers to see if this sounds familiar to anyone. It really has me worried that perhaps this is a major problem but after reading some of these posts I realize maybe it is not as bad as I feared. Any suggestions or ideas on what this may be would be appreciated.
Thanks again, David |

That's a classic spot for the valley pan to drain to. You should check all your injector return lines and caps, make sure one hasn't become unseated or just cracked. Sight unseen I'd bet you have a return line leak that is draining into your valley pan and down the back of the engine.
It could also be your injector pump, but I'd doubt that since it was running fine even whilst leaking fuel. A return line kit for your 6.9 with caps and lines is very cheap at MWFI: http://www.mwfi.com/dieselPage/ford_69.htm $32.00 You can do the job in a few hours if you're even halfway handy with a wrench. You could, if you wanted to swap your injectors too - they're only $24.00ea - might as well while you're in there - might even make your truck run better. Other things it could be: And injection pump can be had as cheaply as $300.00 shipped from Pensacola Diesel: http://pensacoladiesel.com/ind...ries&category_id=178 or you could spend the extra few bucks on the MWFI one and have a top of the line rebuild. My Pensacola pump has been running great for 7,000 miles+ now.
