We've been able to source Viton hoses (with quick turnaround time) from: FryerPower, Albuquerque Alternative Energies,
or Greaseworks! (Greaseworks seems most familiar with VDub conversions, if you are new to all this...) Hope that helps; Good Luck & Skill, MowGood mowgood.com |

Scenario:
Injection Pump main seal leaks. B100 gets on timing belt for awhile Timing Belt gets mushy and fails Piston meets Valve (see photo) This failure and its inevitable result is becoming a more and more common occurrence for pre-TDI VW diesels on biodiesel, according to my mechanic. I will spend a lot of money to make my pump B100 safe. But first... What verification is there that the Bosch injection pump seal kit (DGK 126 as sold by GreaseWorks and others) actually contains Viton seals? Friday GreaseWorks told me their Bosch distributor says the seals are Viton, but they also told me that the distributor cannot come up with material sheets to verify it. They are going by his word only. My mechanic's Bosch distributor says that he is not aware of the DGK 126 kits being Viton, and said that has been a long-term part number, and he doubts that Bosch would change the kit to Viton without also giving it a new part number. Frankly, I am at a loss to know who to believe. Does anyone actually have info on the materials included in Bosch DGK 126? Does anyone have a way to get the materials list out of Bosch? P.S.
If you are using BD in your VW, keep a close eye on the condition of your timing belt! |

Check your phone book for your local industrial bearing supply house, they also carry, or can order, O rings, belts, chains, and seals. You will need to know the inner and outer diameter of the seal you want to replace. Seal dimensions are standerdized and usually are available in viton, basic shaft seals are usually called "double lipped" seals unless they are for some sort of special use, I just ordered a viton shaft seal for a Suntec fuel oil pump that I am converting to use as a fuel lift pump. The viton seal had to be ordered, took 3 days, cost $6.79.

Thanks to those that have commented. But the main shaft seal is not the only seal of concern. I am still interested on comments about whether or not the Bosch kit contains Viton seals.

I asked this same question regarding the seals etc on my Stanadyne rotary DB2 IP on my old 88 F-250, but people seemed to feel it was a non issue. Thank you Lacolocho for starting this thread and particularly thank you SolarBozo for the warning and pic to prove. No B100 for me until I get viton where it counts.

Viton seals are made in a grey purple colour, black seals are not viton ,however some are made with enhanced rubber compounds that resists alcohol degradation

Viton can be black. "...Viton may be brown, orange or black." http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ar/ar79842.htm "Black/Brown" http://www.sealsales.com/sheet/viton.html "Many different formulas have been used for Viton over the years, but black and brown Vitons are functionally interchangeable. Depending upon the formulation, the one may be slightly softer than the other, and black ones contain carbon black." http://www.chm.colostate.edu/~glass/viton.html Jim www dot FryerPower dot com 1987 300DT (The sedan, not the wagon.) Some modifications to the fuel system. 1995 S350D Unmodified fuel system. I plead the 5th. |

Ahh, thanks for the reminder. I did find some VW diesel rabbit IP main seals and looked up the manufacturer specs on them to verify that they are Viton. The part number is CR 6611 but do not let somebody cross-reference them to a different brand. The must be either CR or SKF with the CR number. SKF bought CR awhile back. |
