Would a water distiller work for methanol recovery? This one is an automatic one with a 3 gal holding tank, which could be made bigger. Thanks.
Yes, but probably NO!
If the distiller can boil water, then it will probably boil methanol since methanol has a lower boiling temperature than water.
BUT, the water distiller was not designed with the safety systems needed to prevent fires, explosions, and/or vapor releases that should be included in the design of a distiller made for methanol.
Also, as the methanol evaporates from the solution, the temperature needed to evaporate the diminishing quantities of methanol from the solution increases. The distiller may provide enough heat to achieve the evaporation temperature for high concentration of methanol, but fall short achieving the temperature needed to remove the last remaining amounts you may to remove.
