Planning and gathering for my meth recovery reflux still.

Can I get away with a galvanized condenser shell? I realize my tank has to be something compatable with the KOH based glycerin but I'm wondering if I can use galvanized thin wall pipe on my condensor apparatus.

I want to use a piece of conduit for my stack and condenser. Its galvanized material and I'm wondering how bad the methanol vapor will react with it. Perhaps I should strip it with muratic acid and give the outside a coat of BBQ paint?

My concern is that steel (galvanized or otherwise) is many times worse than copper for heat transfer efficiency. You will need a bigger condensor, if the steel is doing the actual condensing and heat shedding.

Methanol will attack zinc eventually. I do not know the consequences of having disolved zink in the mix when you make you biodiesel.

Finest regards,

troy
