Sounds fine - the ridges won't be an issue. As you mentioned you will insulate well, there should be minimal risk of reflux, so A-OK - good luck!

Sorry for the late reply - just catching up on weeks of backlog!

Do you have a vent, as in my setup diagram? There should be a vent teed off between the meth container and the methoxide input. Dont' worry, it wont draw in air and it wont send methanol fumes out, but it must be there.

I was just wondering if the crimped copper tube could be used as the top reflux tube also, instead of filling a tube up with marbles,copper etc.

The crimped inner pipe does not offer up enough surface area to reflux efficiently like packing does, at least according to my experimenting. GL may say something different, but when I tried this I found it to be somewhat lacking as opposed to a packed reflux tube.
