I need a little help. I recently finished my largest batch to date, 20 gallons of biodiesel. The WVO titrated at 4 and I used a baseline of 4 for a total of 8 g/l of lye. I also used 22% Methanol. the whole process went very well and I had great separation. The only problem is that my test car (87 Ford Escort GL) is now experiencing filter clogging problems on one of those little see-thru cheapo filters.
The stuff clogging up the filter is a creamy colored thick gelatinous mass that when shaken dissolves in biod and turns it whitish. I washed my BD very well, until the wash water was crystal clear. I ran my heated (135 degree f) BD over a flat metal surface (wheelbarrow) and back into a collection container for about an hour until it was crystal clear. I stopped the process to do an inspection and a few drops of water remained at the bottom of the drying tub a little over halfway through the drying process and they were clear too. The finished product was put into four five gallon plastic buckets (very clean and dry) and I could see all the way to the bottom of my dark amber colored BD perfectly with absolutely no sediment of foreign deposits (makes me wanna go to our local micro-brewery!).
I did have dino-diesel in the tank before I filled up with my BD, could there be some water in the dino? We did nave a whole lotta rain here (central Nebraska)last week. This has happened before with smaller batches though. I just went outside and shook up the filter and put it into a small container. It smells a lot like dinodiesel.

hi and welcome to the forum, if you washed till clear then it shouldn't have any soap left in it, and it's probably not methyl stearate(search for god dam white stuff) if it dissolves when shaken, then maybe it is something from the dino.

What u see is not always what u get.
Our reaction only converts high 90%'s of starting material and the starting material is micible with the BD
At relative temps the unreacted couple of % starting material is hiding in the bd and ur filter has just captured it.
Let the finished BD rest for a wk or two before use and the unreacted material will settle out ( foot-out) and then no further worries.
Some oil types (tallows and hydrogenated oils) readily produce solids which melt when warmed and reappear on cooling in the biodiesel. This tendency is reduced if conversion is increased. Do a search on the phrase "how much" in the subject line for a short list of useful information. You will probably decide to use 5g NaOH plus titration after this.

was the biodiesel warm? if so did it reappear when the biodiesel cooled?
if it turns it whitish it doesn't sound like it is dissolving. And why would it without heat.
It sounds like the standard "White" that I used to continually pour out of the bottom of the fuel containers into the "Whites Drum"
This "White" frequently occures when biodiesel made from WVO is allowed to freeze and thaw.
Just pour the last little bit of each fuel drum of biodiesel into the "Whites" drum, shake it all up and let it sit in the sun.
Then, every time you refuel, syphone off the clear biodiesel from the whites drum and keep adding the bottom little bit from each drum to the "Whites" drum.
In my experience the whites drum never contains more than about 1/3 white and this was after a year.
So does ur 1/3 'dregs' turn to BD or Starting Material upon heating/warming ?
My 'Dregs', as expected are Starting Material during Summer and during Winter i get yep, combination of crystalized BD and unreacted Starting Material.( amounts depending on temp drop and type of starting material and convertion percentage )!
A tiny amount of precipitated water is probably adding to the pale coloration ?
I was never able to figure out exactly what they were.
However the layer of white decreased in the summer and increased in the winter and never covered more than about the bottom third of a 25 litre Drum.
