That layer is most likely hydrogenated oil, animal fats, food particles and water. Avoid using it for the best quality and least problematic BD.

WOW that's gonna be alot of waste. I suppose I would rather see it wasted than to mess up my complete batch. Thanks John

Some people separate it out and process it by itself for hot summer BD.

I have been getting oil(cottonseed) with a lot of wax in it.
I have seen this oil when new and although sometimes a few wax crystals were at the bottom of the drum it was mostly clear. I read some stuff on how the vege oil industry deals with wax which is a problem for them. Shoppers don't like to see gunk at the bottom of that expensive oil. Anyway it seems that the wax forms like crystals. Impurities allow crystals to form more easily. I have found that if left to settle long enough more liquid oil comes to the surface but it is very slow. Hot drying helps a lot but is expensive, I have just tried a test batch washing with borax and water and it looks promising but to soon to know really. If you have any luck let me know, I hate wasting all that oil |

Hello Rusty
I would put some of the oil in question into a pan and heat it and see what happens. Frequently you will find that it is a mixture of several different types of oil. It may also contain some water. In my experience this oil makes good biodiesel. |
