I made a batch 13 gallons and it turned thick and had little soap about 1/2 inch like foam on top. The oil checked out to about 8 on titrating. My question is is there a way to save the thick oil or do I need to dump it.

There are many variables, first start by telling how you did your process step by step. Then the more informed people can find out where you may of made a mistake. You can usually recover from most mistakes....at least I did when I first started.

A titration of 8ml is too high for NaOH; that will make a lot of soap and NaOH soap is thick, hence the thickness of your mix now. 5-6ml is the typical recommended cut off unless you have a lot of biodiesel making experience.

10 minutes is probably not enough mixing for 13 gallons, and especially not if the oil is 8ml NaOH titration.

The other thing that can make your mix very thick is losing methanol...are you confident you didn't evaporate off methanol by being too hot or not sealing the container?

I "saved" as much as I could of a bad batch like this by keeping it warm while it settled (80-90F, maybe). It would literally cool and gel up faster than the glycerin could settle, and trap the glycerin in the gel. If you settle warm and drain the glycerin warm, that will be a good chunk of the soap. Then carefully, CAREFULLY try washing out the rest in the fuel portion.

it will probably take a lot of time to wash this batch successfully, and it probably wont be easy. What Ive done in the past with such batches is to put it in a drum and forget about it for a while. the soap will settle out naturally and you can then drain off the clear biodiesel. Drain the glycerol off if you havent done so or it will soon be solid.
