My truck went down last Saturday with 192k miles on it. My mechanic buddy, a former ford tech and self proclaimed biodiesel hater diagnosed it and fixed it. It is the first major failure the entire time I have owned it. Even at that, it wasnt a major failure, just the HPOP. He just called and said it was ready. His exact words were "sure is one funny truck, start it up and it whistles like a pissed off hair drier (turbo) but smells like french fries out the back." So I said..but it sure runs good on that crappy bio dont it. His reply, ummmm yeah, it runs great for a truck with almost 200k miles, better than most he has seen on regualar fuel.
Now remember, this guy hates bio, his first response when I said it was broke is that is must be that crappy fuel Im making. I sure was nice to hear him say it ran great on my "crappy" fuel. Big Grin

sorry you dont like yours. These engines are great once you know what to look for and once the fixes are done. By fixes, I mean the problematic components. HPOP, EGR, EGR cooler, Oil Cooler. Once these components are fixed right, they dont have problems unless they are modded heavily. All the parts I mentioned I have upgraded or "fixed" . My HPOP went out from use. Without looking up your past issues that you have posted, I would bet your truck is either an 05 or an 06

Honestly, I've never heard anything good about that model, which contrasts with other Fords- people tend to love the 7.3, for instance (myself included). That said, glad to hear yours has made it to middle age.

Yea i have an 04 and an 05... all that said, you may be right BUT then compare it to the fuel mileage of its comparable competition and you will see it lacks in that department as well.

you may be right, but my truck also gets about 21 mpg on the hwy pulling a 2k trailer, or 16.5 around town pulling the same trailer. The problem with these truck is that there is no real rhyme or reason to why they do what they do or when they do it. That makes it so much harder to narrow the issues down. I have alot of seat time in mine, so I notice when there is a small problem before it becomes a larger one. I dont know what else to say.

well, my truck isnt exactly stock, I do have custom tunes, intake, exhaust. But the mileage I stated is accurate. I get 550-600 miles to a tank on the hwy. filled all the way to the top. I drove from Orlando to Macon Ga on 50 dollars of diesel 2 months ago. I dont remember how many gallons it was, but the mileage on that one was 20.96 mpg. I havent met anyone else that gets this mileage either. Most get 18-19 hwy. My mom and others have always said I was the luckiest person she ever met.
Its def a 6.0

This is definitely the first time i ever heard anyone say they like the 6.0 Ford...then againFord lovers do tend to defend them...that ^.0 is by far the worst diesel ever,,my buddy test drove one and the crank broke in half on the test drive,,and the idiot STILL bought one,,his new truck then spent most of the time in the shop for problems "he's the only one to ever have" apparently..
21 mpg from one of those turds is unheard of,,no matter what's done to them,,well maybe if it's downhill for about 300 miles..maybe 11 mpg,,that's believable,,
Funny statement "after you fix all the problems"...makes me want to run out and buy one now,,there's only ONE REAL diesel engine in a pickup out there,,and it's the Cummins,,now there's a tried and true heavy duty diesel engine,,put a million miles on 2 of them without any issues,,of course that may be a little unsual,,i do tend to take it easy on my trucks,,now those get 20 mpg all day long,,admitedly they have minor issues too,,but nowhere near the crap the Fords have..
Flame on..Smile

hmmm, my buddies 05 dodge burns 2 gallons of oil every oil change, and had to have the tranny rebuilt at 50k miles. it has 120k on it now, and the parking lever is extrememly hard to move and the interior is falling apart. Big Grin

not only do I like my truck, I love it. But I wouldnt go out and buy another 6.0 if this one got stolen. I dont like the odds of me getting another good one.

Yeah, the Dodge transmission is notorious for failing. I have had mine rebuilt twice. I now have about 200,000 miles on the truck. I should have thrown an Allison in there the first time.

just a note on Dodges....

My dad had a 93 w/ a Cummins.
Yep! Tranny got rebuilt! Then the flex plate shattered on it one day so that got replaced too.

The engines are great. The truck body leave much to be desired.
His doors wouldn't shut tight, hinges wore out, steering box was always coming loose, electronics were failing on it, the seat felt like you were riding on a box spring (because you could literally feel the springs), and the ride was horribly rough.

But...the engine was great!

Love the engine, hate the truck.

Now, if Ford would throw a Cummins engine with an Allison tranny in one of their trucks...now THAT would be a truck!

There was a guy in my neighborhood that bought a new '07 Ford F-450.
That stupid truck spent more time in the shop than it was on the road.
He hated it!

It's an absolutely GORGEOUS truck....but the engine was a nightmare.

Here's hoping their new ones are better. They can't blame International Harvester now....

Guys;

After years of putting up with the 6.5 GM diesel (both Turbo and non-turbo) I switched to Dodge's with the 5.9 Cummins. The motor is awesome! I have a '97 and a '99, the '97 is a 12 valve, the '99 is a 24 valve - but both are great engines. Haven't had any transmission problems yet and the '99 has 400k kilometers on it. Bodywork isn't too bad considering the years, but I gotta tell ya it's light years ahead of the GM stuff. Fuel mileage is good in both (not that I look at it that closely). Never had a Ford diesel, but my diesel mechanic (who runs 7.3's in his work trucks) told me to stay away from the 6.0's - good enough for me!
