Hey I am just getting started and made a few small batches with good results

My questions are:

hydrogenated oil is bad for BD right?

If the oil titrates high can it be diluted with better or new oil? is this a good idea?

if diluting with new works ok, can you use Hydrogenated oil and mix it with new or good used?

Thanks for the help

Hello rlaxton

Hydrogenated oil makes very acceptable biodiesel. HOWEVER, the biodiesel may go solid at a fairly high temperature.

Yes, you can dilute both high titration oil and hydrogenated oil.

HI,

No, unfortunately it's more complicated than that. If it's liquid it can still be totally rotten. LIquid versus solid oils are the result of non-quality variables such as hydrogenation, animal fats, tropical fats, all of which makes acceptible biodiesel with worse cold flow properties than liquid oils , which are made from things like soy or canola or corn oil (at least in the USA).

Anyway, the ways to test the oil are:
sniff test : crude test. If it still smells like food and not offensive, it's probably still lightly-used
titration, a test to see how degraded the oil is: http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/titratiingoil
water content: oil also gets water in it from the frying process, or from rain if it's stored outside. Here are a pair of tests for looking for water in oil: http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/testingoilforwater for a crude test, and http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/quantitativewatertest/ for a better one once you have a scale to work with.
