I am new to BD processing and I don't know if I am doing this right. I have done two batches and both seem to have the same results. The first batch I used 1L of new oil heated to 70 degrees with 5.9g of KOH 93% and 250ml of yellow heet. The separation seemed to take longer than what I have read on the forums. It finally separated and I began to wash it after draining the bottom layer off. The first wash I was left with cloudy water, a 2-3 inch layer of white stuff, and cloudy BD. The second wash was the same but the white layer was smaller.
The second batch I used 5.2g of KOH and 210ml of yellow heet, I also used a blender for fifteen mins. The separation was almost instant and the remaining settled out in 45 mins. When I washed this batch I got the same white layer.
Am I using too much methanol/lye?
I took the info off this website and Journey to forever. I used the 3.5 x 1.4= 4.9 On journey to forever, it has a scale for the different levels of purity for KOH. I used 5.2 for 93%, is this wrong? Should I stick with 4.9? If anyone could shed some light for me, I would be greatfully thankful.
Im no expert but From what I read everything is going right. The first 1-3 washes your wash water will be a cloudy color. Keep washing until the water (settled at bottom) is clear. The bio is cloudy because it is not yet dry.. do a search on "how to dry" in this forum..
I agree with lost26, it sounds normal. Much of the information on The Journey to Forever site is out of date, I strongly recommend you do not use their information.
You are short on KOH. The correct amount of KOH is 7g adjusted for purity. as your KOH is 93% purity, that means you should be usingshould have used about 7.5g KOH.
