I live in Iowa, and when I drive on I-80 between Omaha and Des Moines, I can see hundreds of windmills.

Why can I see 20 in one area moving at once while ONE remains motionless?

I have some ideas, but I'd rather hear from somebody who knows the facts.

Graduating college in Dec. and looking to make biodiesel for personal use. Any schematics for a homemade processor that meets ASTM D6751 would be greatly appreciated - or just tips and advice in general.

Was told once that the non-turning windmill of 2 on a ranch was designed for greater energy output hence more torque meaning more wind needed to turn it. It was set higher than the turning one also.

If the ones you saw were all the same output-wise and at relatively the same height (being Iowa this is most likely), reducing the likelihood of wind phenomena like eddies and updrafts, it was probably just down for maintenance with the blades locked in place.
