Oil pic I heated 3 samples of different oil. The least used oil did not produce any bubbles. The other 2 bubbled as in the picture (the WVO is approx 230F when I took the picture) Does this mean the oil has alot of water in it. The bubbles formed on the bottom of the frying pan and just came to the surface NO splattering or explosions of water noted. Or is this normal for heating WVO.

sure looks like it's bubbling in the way I"d expect of wet oil.

"how much" wet oil is OK is somethign you kind of have to learn to decide for yoruself (and to complicate matters, different frying pans/different sizes of samples, will look different on the test, so always do the same size sample and the same shape of pot).

If you're just starting out, do your 'learning' on the dry stuff first, then progress to the more difficult oil.

Water and free fatty acids (the titration value) both work together to cause problems- if you have wet oil but it's really good on the titration (under about 3ish - that's not a hard and fast rule!) then you dont' tend to get 'glop' or other problems as much as you could get these problems with high-FFA oil and the same amount of water. Likewise, high-ffa oil is easier to use if you've gotten all the water out of it first.

The oil titrates at 2.5. It has also been sitting approx. 2-3 weeks in the TX sun in a black barrel. Should I just use the top 90% and leave the rest in the barrel to leach off the rest of the water.

Ian:
Are you related to Ken Tucker in the Waco area? I lived in Waco/Hewitt until '98, then moved to Dallas. If you know Ken, the next time you see him please tell him that Alan in Dallas said hi.

I am interested in making biodiesel and would like to speak with someone in the central Texas area who has experience with the process. I have access to WVO, and assembling the processing equipment in not a problem. There are many web sites showing different types of apparatus, but no two of them are the same. Speaking with an expereience biodiesel maker would be helpful. My address is wsdc@hotmail.com.

Hope to hear from you.

Hi,

I got some pics of vegetable oil before and after heating. It is very guey. We were testing the water content using an EASZ-1 online water in oil sensor.

I forgot to add the other pictures of the installed biodiesel water content sensor and the dry oil/wet oil. I am trying to upload them now
