Mike, you dont say what size your batch is. Plastic bottles are safer for mixing methoxide - any caustic makes glass very slippery, even moreso if youre using gloves. I dont use gloves myself, I just wash my hands in water immediately if they get caustic or methoxide on them.
Same with the funnel - use plastic, theyre cheap and durable. When filtering the oil I use an ordinary fine mesh kitchen sieve; the small crumbs which slip thru come out in the glycerol afterwards, but I do use a 5 micron filter for the finished biodiesel in any case. |

Hi Mike
You mention items of personal safety gear. If you get solid NaOH on your skin, it will burn. I've done it - but get water to it quickly and there shouldn't be too much damage. However, if you get NaOH in your eye, it can blind you. Whilst I might not always use gloves, I never forget to wear goggles when handling solid NaOH. A couple of guys here have had caustic in their eye and from their descriptions, it's not pleasant. Fortunately, they didn't suffer lasting damage but it just isn't worth the risk. Nick |
