I have tried twice with the on-line Dr Pepper method. Im getting consistent results, but they are not good results.
I have a picture at the following URL:
http://ftp.cableone.net/usao/051407_16581.JPG
Im adding 250ml of yellow HEET with 4g of NaOH to 1L of 50C new oil.
The first batch I made produced about 150ml of glycerin, but all attempts at washing produced white glop settling to the bottom. I kept washing over and over, and I gave-up after I only had 100ml of BD left from the 1L batch. I tried adding it to the car, but it caused the car to run very rough for about a day.
I tried a second batch, and the same thing is happening again. I again only got 150ml glycerin out (see picture).
Im not sure what im doing wrong. Im following the directions 100% AFAIK. Someone suggested the yellow HEET is not the correct bottle, can anyone confirm yellow or red as the correct bottle?
Also, after the 1-liter batch has setteled, can it be shaken up again? I was thinking of trying the 5% prewash while the glycerin was still in the bottle to see if that helps with the white soapy contents im getting during washing.

I used a spray bottle (old windex type) filled with tap water and sprayed through the top of the bottle onto the BD. Then I let it settle and then I very gently laid the bottle on it's side and slowly rolled it back and forth. Looks halfway decent this time, white water but not soapy yet. I don't know how long to let it settle before I drain the water, I think I was doing it too quickly last time which caused me to drain some BD every wash, leaving only 100ml out of 1L of oil. Very bummed about the first batch. Anyone have a good idea of how long to let a 2L bottle batch settle before you drain? Im figuring about 8 hours, so maybe two washes per day for the rest of the week, hopefully that will work.

Well, first of all, you didn't follow the Dr Pepper instructions exactly, you are using the Barqs method! Big Grin (Ha, Tilly! I beat you to it!) Seriously, though, the yellow bottle is correct. The first wash should be very gentle. Succeeding washes can be more agressive. You don't need to settle for 8 hours, you can drain the white water off as soon as it settles, if there is still unsettled water in the BD, no problem, the next wash will help it settle faster. You must also DRY it! DO NOT RUN CLOUDY FUEL in your vehicle. It should be crystal clear. One last thing, what is the lye you are using? DO NOT use Drano! It must be 100% NaOH (or KOH 90%). HTH Smile
