I was reading the directions and was wondering if measure my oil to the proportion of 12 oz of HEET (yellow bottle). This way you don't need to handle the methoxide at all. I was looking at the HEET bottle and noticed it has the marked HDPE 2 on the bottom and was wondering if the methoxide would destroy the bottle.

If my calculation is correct, approximately 1.6 liters of oil (54.11 oz) will be needed to be mixed with 345.84 mL (12 oz) of methanol.

Good idea or bad idea? If the concern that the 2 liter bottle might not be large enough, given
1.945 of fluid would be present...I was thinking of using a 3-liter Shasta bottle. Finally, a use for Shasta!

On second thought, maybe I'll use one bottle of HEET per two separate 2-liter bottles with .85 L of oil in each bottle. Well, gotta drink more soda tonight. My question still remains is the HEET bottle good enough to add the teaspoon of lye ?

Kwong,
Yes, HDPE will handle the methoxide fine. Just be careful that there is room in the bottle for the caustic. It will get very warm as well. Not enough to melt the plastic, but enough to put some pressure in the bottle-be careful when opening it. Also, it is hard to see through the yellow plastic to know when all the lye is disolved. Thanks Joe, I was concerned that the methoxide would disintegrate the bottle. I'm much rather play with the quantity of vegetable oil and limit my exposure to methanol and methoxide than the other way around.
