just wanted to add my 2 cents here. i purchased buuuud's plans about 2 months ago. plans are what everyone has said. they are good enough to explain and to be understood by a machinist. in fact, ive shopped around to find out what it would cost to fab this to several machinists. just for the labor alone, most quoted in the $400 to $500 range for a centrifuge milled from a single piece of stock so this is why i did not proceed and i think maybe others stopped at this point too. the cost advantage is not there unless: 1) you can source a good block of aluminum for cheap or free. otherwise, brand new is a few hundred 2) labor, esp if the machinist fab's it from 1 solid piece 3) you need to source a motor. a few machinists suggested they make it in 2 parts. however, it would need to be welded then balanced. so tack on another cost to the total. so bottom line is that if you decide to make one yourself using buuuuud's good plans and be price competitive for what you can buy out there, the only way i can see is to have a friend who is a machinist (or yourself) and get cheap material. | |||

has anyone thought about putting a simple bowl on top of a heavy balanced flywheel? more spinning mass (which is incredibly easy to machine or find pre-made, no balancing necessary) reduces the vibration effect of a bowl full of oil. if the flywheel is much heavier than the oil and the centrifuge bowl, the effects of the bowl being unbalanced would be negligible. | |||

Has anyone thought of trying one of these? http://www.laundry-alternative...ucts/Spin_Dryer.html They are around $130. There is a smaller one available for around $80. I have an old Bock laundry extractor with a 13" bowl that turns 1800 rpm that I am going to try. I plan to put a sheet of tin inside of the bowl to bock the holes. The3 bowl has a heavy weight on the bottom to balance an uneven load. Tom gozapper | |||

I built mine out of four pieces, it was the easiest way to machine the rotor. We used extra thick steel so the weight would help control any out of balance issues. All 'balancing' was done on the lathe. Aluminum is not neccesary. Unless you have access to an AC TIG and know how to use it I wouldn't bother with aluminum. Steel rotors work great as long as you clean it out right after using it (a lot of water builds up while fuging WVO). Once cleaned all it needs is a good coat of oil to prevent rust, not much of an issue for people like us ![]() When I figure out how the heck to start a thread I can give some more details and maybe a step by step under the 'Biodiesel Equipment' section. | |||

Here is a pic of mine 'fuging' some City of Tempe tap water. It created a huge mist cloud and after just one hour of operation we shut it down to find a thick brownish/black sludge remaining. Makes it difficult to crink out of the tap now ![]() ![]() A rotor type centrifuge is a must for any homebrewer making more than 100 gallons at a time on a regular basis. I built this unit for less than $200, and I need to build a better container and expect it to run less than $100. | |||

Here is the link: How to build a centrifuge I am also going to detail on another thread the heat exchanger I built for my gas and diesel powered pumps. On my little gas pump it works out to about 15,000btu's of free heat per hour. Haven't fired it up yet, but on paper it looks good! ![]() | |||
