I have someone offering me Pomace & Olive oil and it is marked as not for human consumption. Can I use this in my car?

I also have someone who has vegetable grade machine oil. Can that be used too?

I'm just not up on these types of veggie oil.

As Long as it is clean and dry, burn it.

I'd be curious about the machine oil; I know hi-temp bearing grease is made from vegetable cellulose so I guess it would depend on the liquidity of it, that grease is obviously not meant to turn liquid. But if you had a liquid form without petroleum that would be interesting.

The other stuff is probably from silage? So it's undoubtedly OK.

I talked to the guy today. There is about 3/4 of a 55 gallon drum there. I've got an appointment to check it out tomorrow, and if it's the right kind of oil (i'm hoping there are labels on the barrel) it's all mine for nothing.

He says it is liquid and they used it for oil-lubing the stuff they made in the machine shop that was using it. I don't know if i'm going to take it, but if there isn't any other "stuff" in it, it might be worth it.

What do you all think?

I take any drop of anything with the word "oil" in it. I sort it out at home. Most of it burns, the rest can go into a renderers barrel at a place that gets paid for thier oil. Win Win..

Well, I stopped to take a look at the oil that was marked as Not for Human Consumption.

Here is what it is:

Manufacturer: The Solae Company

Label Details:
Special Soy Lecithin
With Exhoxylated Mono Dyglyceride and Propylene Glycol
Food Grade

Can I use this in my VW Golf or am I best not to? I took a sample of the oil It is BRAND NEW oil and does not have "gunk" in it at all. The sample is a very dark tea color, pretty much the color of Coke. I could see zero water sitting it it either, but I did take from the top of the drum.

Isn't propylene glycol anti-freeze?

Not sure. This is what I found about it online: http://www.dow.com/productsafety/finder/prog.htm

Sounds more like a food additive.

The oil was used by a machine shop and when they moved from the building that the oil is in, they left the oil behind because they no longer had the fitted cover for the barrel.

Yes, green anti-freeze like Sierra, without phosphates. But there is food grade also and a ton of other uses most of which indicate it's not a good idea to burn it, especially the cooling properties which make it akin to water.

Soy Lecithin is the kind of kernels that come out of soy pods and if it's food grade it probably will not turn liquid. I don't think you want any of this stuff.

I was afraid of that. It sure didn't smell like veggie oil. I also do metal machining and it smelling much more like some of the coolant oils I use for that, albeit much different that what I currently use.

Here is the Wiki entrance. It is used as a non-poisonous coolant, food additive, and emulsifier. It is hygroscopic, so test for water content regularly.

I've opted to not take this oil. I have a reliable source of oil so a bit that is free but may wreck my engine is not worth it.

Thanks for your responses everyone.
