Hello All,

I got a used Greasecar system over the weekend and was looking for some thoughts from folks with experience. i had put sometime lurking on this forum for a couple of years to get an idea what is best.

The system had been installed in a VW TDI and had been modified from what I think the stock setup would be...Carter lift pump, vegtherm before the IP and most interestingly, a HotFox fuel warmer in the stock Greasecar tank. The tank had the stock coolent inlet and outlet ports joined with a heater hose and the joining hose was dry inside (I don't think that there was a coolant into oil problem based on that).

After the HotFox the lines went hose-in-hose till separated to the fuel filter (coolant) and fuel switching solenoid like the normal Greasecar would.

It also has about 3 different temperature sensors, one at the fuel filter head, one just before the IP and one just before the loop of the return line. There is also a vacuum gauge.

The system will be going into a 1.6 IDI VW. Should i go ahead and simplify this setup? For a old IDI without a computer it seems like overkill. i could remove the HotFox and go stock with HIH or re-plumb the HotFox and filter heater with a HOH setup...HIH does make me nervous. Lift pump or is that overkill? Keep the loop or reroute the return back to the tank (it already has a unused fitting on top for a return line). Will probably keep the vegtherm in.

It is kind of a weird setup on one hand but presents alot of options on the other.

Any help/thoughts is greatly appreciated.

From this angle (looking forward) with out the sound n heat cover on, U can clearly see the Flat Plate Heat Exchanger George n I installed. As I said above, IMHO, the standard GreasCar kit with out additional heat added to the VO will end up overtaxing your IP and or cause fouling of your rings n injectors. All of which are thousands of dollars to repair.

I strongly suggest you at least monitor your VO temp. just prior to entering your IP.

read more here on how to upgrade your wvo vw

i will stick with the HotFox then and add a FPHE; going that route would lend to a HOH setup.
A tube-in-tube heater might help mid-way between the tank and the lift pump with a HOH, but might not be needed?
And maybe add injector line heaters but remove the vegtherm...or upgrade the alternator to handle the load of three components.

Sounds like keeping the temp sensor just up stream of the IP would probably give the best heat measure. Then the vacuum gauge could be moved to the top of the veg oil filter.

I shouldn't have made it sound that the Greasecar system was best...I meant to post best "price" i could find for a tank, solenoids, gauges etc. to get started.

Thanks for the help and link Omar.
