Hi all,

A friend gave me a couple of scavenged barrels to help me get my WVO cleaning rig set up. They were previously used to hold "Natural hot dip" from Poly One, and still have residue (perhaps 0.5-1.0 cup per barrel) in them that smells like vinyl and has the consistency of lard.

Any suggestions on cleaning this up? I thought I might pressure wash it at the car wash, but don't know how toxic this stuff is.

Thanks much!

I did a google for "PolyOne natural hot dip", but only found a link to the company web site. They claim the product is end-use certafiable for FDA kitchen equipment, and it's a geome vinyl plastisol, which is harmless.

It's heat and pressure activated, and it's most common use is in the soft handles of tools and kitchen utensils.

Having said that, you may or may not have the same product I found on the net... Refer to any labeling on the barrel [required labeling for toxins or dangerous contaminates] and/or contact the company.

Here's a link to their web site:
http://www.polyone.com/EN-US/PRODUCTS/VINYLPLASTISOLS/P...VinylPlastisols.aspx
And there's a link to handling and storage procedures.... Looks harmless to me.

If all is well, just blast it out and be done with it.

I'm going to call the company tomorrow to ask about solvent possibilities. The gunk is moist enough to scrape out with an old spatula, but the remaining residue is obviously not water soluble. I did a spot test with acetone which worked (though that crap is fantastically poisonous on its own. Luckily, San Francisco has great chemical disposal facilities.) I'll use a brush with a long handle so I don't have my head in a barrel full of those fumes. Wink

Thanks!

A spay can or quart of paint & varnish remover/striper will be cheaper and easy to work with. Acetone is expensive and will evaporate and dry quickly.
