There's 2 routes to go from my ethereal home on the coast to the great city by the bay. 1 way takes me along Hwy 1 basically as far as it goes until it becomes the 101 freeway for a short while before the Golden Gate Bridge. The other route follows 1 and then merges with the 101 near Petaluma about 30 miles N. of where Hwy 1 merges into it. Here's the google map My routes are a slight variation that decreases time with the freeway run and makes it a fair amount faster. But the 30 miles of Hwy 1 vs. freeway are drastically different. 1 is a scenic route and it means a lot more gear changing and twisting turning and the like. But 1 is fun to drive and the pace is a lot more laid back than the freeway. A nice reprieve from the solid grind of the freeway for awhile. It allows me to warm up slowly to the city and I figure the same for the truck where ambient temps are going to be higher for the most part and certainly in the city.
I have waited awhile to make this run consistently in my truck with just over 10k on it now but it's time to make a family visit and it will become a more regular part of my driving routine. This time I'm going all the way to Santa Cruz. I will basically just make it down and back home on a full 15 gal tank but will pack an extra 5 for the trip. So the question is really up to many interpretations: Will I see you on the Hwy, or the freeway, ladies, gentlemen? Ahh yes, I'd vote for the Half Moon Bay route, simply because it's much prettier and lesser traveled. I used to drive up the the 280 merge from Redwood City and drop back down to hit the surf north of Mav's.
Sometimes I really miss living in SF. But not always Besides I bet you there are tons of WVO opportunities in Half Moon Bay! ------ 2001 Ford Excursion 7.3l PSD 1984 Ford F-250 6.9l IDI Conceptually identical Home Brewed WVO Conversions w/ completely parallel fuel systems.
