At work they're tossing a Jabsco flexible impeller pump because the electric clutch (it was belt driven) is fried but I took the pulley assembly off and I could mount a new one on the shaft and drive it with a 1/3 HP 1725 RPM motor I have laying around. The pump has a rubber (nitrile I think) impeller and 1" inlet and outlet. The original application was as a water circulation pump on a Zamboni (yes, Zamboni-I work at a rink) ice resurfacer. Would this be good for pumping WVO? The only caveat I think of is the impeller getting eaten-the pump body is all stainless and brass.

Thoughts?

The Jabsco works fine for WVO

If it was more fun everyone would be doing it!

I think they do make viton impellers as well so I'll look into that. Would viton also stand up to WVO that has been mixed with diesel also? I just thought of one other concern-would the 1/3 hp motor be enough to operate the pump?

I am using a flexable impeller pump made by Shurflo and it works great. I think my impeller is Buna-N, though. My car's fake (chinese copy) Holley blue pump was letting air in and making the car run poor. As a test, I put in my shurflo pump and used the internal 3/8" threads instead of the garden hose threads and it has powered my car trouble free for a week. I am now going to plumb in my collection wand and have a manifold and some valves and use the pump as my fuel pump and collection pump, all self contained in the trunk of the car.

My stock Jabsco impeller failed rather quickly pumping WVO. It first successfully moving about 50 gallons wvo, then sat with oil in it for a couple weeks. When I tried using it again (pumping from storage into the BD processor) it didn't work at all because the impellor had crumbled into little squashy swollen rubber bits. The local store only listed one replacement impellor, of unknown rubber compound (it's called a water pump). Thanks to you mentioning optional compounds, I'll ask them to lookup the options and choose a different one.
