hey all, so my band recently bought a 1988 ford e 350 school bus, which we plan on taking on tour starting aug 15th.

the only thing left to do is install a filter in the engine compartment and re route the fuel line.

what filter would be best and most affordable?

would a regular diesel fuel filter work?

thanks a bunch

Search the forum, by the nature of your questions there's quite a bit more you should be asking if you're asking that. Welcome to the hard earned fuel section, no offense, it will just save you a ton of aggravation this way.

The best way to get help here is to give as much info as possible about your vehicle and filtering. Things llike: two tank system, heated fuel tank pick-up, FPHE, HOH, centrifuge or other filtration/de-watering, etc. Where do you get your oil and what kind it is, is it PHO or likely to have significant animal fats...

These factors seriously impact the usefulness of any possible suggestions you will get, and your success in this arena. If you make an important and avoidable error, you could end up stranded with a very large paperweight full of equipment, and no way to get to your gig.

thanks for the info

so we have a 1988 ford e-350 short bus
v8 7.3 liter diesel

we're running a two tank system

our filtering consists of a water heat for water seperation and settling, its then cooled an pumped into a racor 10 micron filter then down to a 2 micron filter, the last filter going into the engine is what im asking about.

our oil comes from a friendly korean restaurant, that has almost no suspended water a nice amber color. real nice people over there.

A little more info would help. In what ways are you adding heat to your WVO fuel in the bus, and how is it plumbed (where is coolant tapped, and the order in which the coolant circulates)? What kind of 2 micron filter, and is that rating absolute or nominal? I don't been to be a pain, but these things matter.

Sounds like a great oil source, you are fortunate.

we're using the standard run the coolant back to the tank into a copper spiraled line in the tank then back out.

the 2 micron is a racor, im not sure if it is absolute or nominal. its the racor diesel series, i dont have it in front of me so i cant really say model number off hand, but it has the bowl on the bottom.

So you are not using any other heat source, like an FPHE?

Three filters? My '97 has a 10 micron Racor water separator then a 26 micron stainless steel post filter just before the fuel pump. It's only function is to trap any chicken skin vegoil that may have broken free from my heaters. IIRC the Ford's stock diesel filter is rated at 7 microns. The 2 micron filter is more than adequate. I don't use a 2 micron because I feel it will clog way too fast and it's over $23 per filter.

Hey, Hey

I think that he is referring to his filtering system there, not an on-board filter, which is what he is asking about...
