How do they seal airplane wings?

Either specially formed (and expensive) bladders or separate aluminum fuel tanks formed to fit the intereior fo the wing. The skin is not simply coated on the inside to hold fuel.

But you can fabricate these fuel tanks with aluminum and rivets...and then coat the interior. I have built a few aircraft and done this on two. It is labor intensive to say the least. Contact your local EAA chapter if you are interested in more info on this.

This is actually my Jet A start tank. The OEM tank is used for WVO.
Vehicle is an '80 300SD and tank is made from a six gallon Jerry can and fits behind wheel well.

And the heated pickup inside:

may seem stupid, just noticed, almost seems like your al tubing has a different thickness on each end coming out of the tank.

I may be wrong, but the apparent difference in thickness may be due to one end being saw-cut (no inner burr) and the other end being cut by arotating tubing cutter. The tubing cutter often leaves an inner burr that may give the illusion of greater wall thickness.

since the late 70's cessna and others have actually been using inside of the wing itself with no internal tanks, no bladders. yes, they can be troublesome, but all in all have worked pretty well. the link below has a photo with the inspection cover off (lower left side of page). not a great photo, but you get the idea.

I hope that you all enjoy some of the ideas and pictures that have been posted on this forum.

I second that, I fly cesna 172's, when you pop the fill hole on top of each wing to fill, you can see the fuel just sloshing around inside of the wing, with no apparent bladder, etc.

lars: are you actually using jet A in your diesel? how is that running if so?

PWRDBYFOOD, why do you think the cooler is a bad idea? Assuming the plastic is WVO-compatible, it's an already insulated, easily accessible container. Why not?

There are always exceptions to the rule.
This was an option offered by Cessna from 1979 on. These integral wing tanks are constructed using the same procedure as are used to make the more common riveted aluminum internal wing tanks.

This may be worth discussing as an option for those who want an aulminum tank but can afford the time to make one temselves better than the cost of having one welded up for them.

Husky Collapsible Water Tank — 50-Gallon, Nonpotable, Model# BT-50/30 Oz. Vinyl
Bladder tank has many practical uses. Farmers and firefighters alike find applications for this easily transported tank. Easy to handle and folds down for compact storage. Nonpotable water tank can be used for gray water storage. Air tested before shipping to assure no defects.

I posted something earlier about how I tried essentially this but scaled down. Mine is a cylinder instead of a pillow shape, and holds a more practical 10 gallons instead of 50. I'll get some pics up here eventually. I would think that the pillow would move around too easily unless you built a tank for it. Think of a hamster wheel. Then again, that would be a nice low profile tank that you could then store stuff on top of.
