Thanks Omar. It looks like the heads are either Hayden or Perma-cool. I still couldn't seem to figure out the brand of the heat exchanger though.

This maybe redundant but I saw on something very similar to that filter heat exchanger attached to a gas 4 cyl VW/Audi engine the last time I was at at the u-pull junkyard . I wanted to get it but I didn't have my metric allen head wrenches with me at the time. Maybe next trip .

Welder, in 'other products from this seller' he lists the filter head as 'Toyota Supra Celica Spyder Remote Oil Filter Base~New'. 25 dollars. I bought the Permacool one from Summit racing. We have tons of the filter mount HEs at work as well. Aluminum and brazed copper? I think? I'll have to cut open one of those, I already cut an aluminum one in half. I posted pictures here somewhere. HTH Smile Yeah, on the very first page of this thread is a picture link. Smile

Thanks Rk! I think Frybrid also mentioned that those HE units have VW origins.

Thanks Joe! I'd love to know if the guts of those heat exchangers are brazed or what? Frybrid sells them as part of their filters. If they are copper brazed, polymerization might be a concern. Nickel brazed would be fine though, I think.

So I bought an oil cooler unit http://stores.ebay.com/tmvtaylor
from this guy and made one of these filter units my self out of a vw oil cooler. This oil cooler is HAYDEN brand. The head of the oil cooler I bought is the same as his SVO filter unit. Also the nipple that goes up the center is 3/4 16 I'm pretty sure, and had a hard time finding anything with that tread. If I had to make it again I would have waited, because he dropped his price on this unit from $300 to $150.

Just checked my link and found this http://cgi.ebay.com/WVO-BIO-SVO-Diesel-Fuel-Heater-Whol...Z42604QQcmdZViewItem It is for a lot of 10 of these filters for $1300. But would not be worth wile as a group buy.

Thanks for the info Steve! I'm just basically trying to figure out where I can buy the oil cooler heat exchanger heads and the Hayden or Permacool heads for wholesale prices.

I'm trying to start my own svo supply company and I want to be able to offer cheaper units like the Frybrid/tvmtaylor style units as well as high end custom units that heat the filter element instead of the head. This would really only matter in cold climates. In warm climates the Frybrid/tvmtaylor unit would work just fine after the cold oil in the element was replaced by the hot oil flowing in from the heat exchanger head.

I actually followed Omars link and read through about 40 pages of tvmtaylors' feedback checking his supplier info in an attempt to find his heat exchanger supplier. I finally gave up. His volume is huge.

Napa or some other major player might be able to wholesale them to me.

I had planned to have my custom svo filters out on the market by now, but I've had a lot of problems trying to find reliable machinists. I've got one now. I may have a display photo to post this thread soon. Hopefully, anyway.

1) are the prefilter screens able to be used with the pump option?

I dont have the pump on mine, nor did I opt forr the screens, so I dont know.

2) what about the water collection bowl.

N/A. no water bowl for me. but it can be used w/ either pump. also a water sensor is available, to alert you inside the car when water becomes a problem.

3) is the pump able to replace lift pump on a 123 mb

One of the 2 available is called a lift pump, so?

4) what about the filter change indicator

??which one? if you have the filter pressurized or on the suction side, you will need a differnt setup. mine i]s pressurized at this time, so A vac gauge wont work. I have thought of a oil pressure gauge. but I dont need 80 psi.

5) can the purge option be used on the pump as well.

? there is a vent on the head, to make purge easier. this would work w/ any options, I think.

thanks, i value your opinion more than a salesman, thanks again george

I would call reliable and talk it over with them. they were very helpful to me on the phone when I called.

Hi mobetta,

It looks like the Stanadyne uses special filters rather than screw on ones. What is the price of replacement elements?

How is the heater spear attached? Is it threaded or a bayonet?

hello- the filters are a press fit, with a plastic ring that locks them on. way easier than unscrewing an element that's inside a coolant wrap. also, this design puts the incoming fuel on the bottom of the filter, and draws from the top.

the replacement elements are about $15(5um,6") from reliable, or $9.70 from the local carquest(wix,5um, 5"). they accept a 5um filter used on 96-02 gm diesel vans, and also a unit which is OE on bobcats and other equipment,(both are 5um, one is 4.3", the other 5") so are pretty easy to find. they also can be had in 30um and 2 um.

heres the heater- it drops in, and has a plastic nut which holds it. sealed w/ o ring.

I am very happy with it. I did clog the first one in less than 500 miles, so I revised my home filtering setup quite a bit. I was amazed by the fact that the oe filter would last 3-4k, running the same grease.
to me that means this is way superior filter, and I am glad that I had to re-vamp my home filtering. I now have only 300ish miles on the second filter- but the first was a 4.3", this is a 6", so I cannot directly compare them.

About the filter price- I was "misqouted" on the phone when I ordered my filters- I went to pick them up and they tried to get me for $48 for 2 Red Face .

I didn't buy them- but went to filter1.com and get them for $11.50 ea/ w/ free shipping on orders of 6 or more. not much more than the MB(wix) spin-on's are, and a way better filter. got over 1k on this one, since I rehabbed the home filtering.

Thanks for the reply but the filters from that link aren't the ones I'm looking for. I'm lookinig for something similar to the old lovecraft filter, but not one where I have to add a heat exchanger in place of the stock fuel filter.
