Heat Xchanger before welding. The can is a used GM A/C receiver drier. They can be obtained for free from your local A/C shop. There is 20-some feet of Aluminum tubing rolled on a mandrel and stuffed inside. Bungs were turned and threaded, then welded on.

Heat exchanger on left - heated filter right - fully plumbed with Dayco Gen II 1/4" ID Fuel Injection Line, biodiesel rated and cheaper than Viton.

you can see more of this install at this link

I was just reading this thread and see that there are some good ideas being kicked around....

Although we no longer sell them, I thought I would post a pick of the A-1 and A-1 JR for folks who might be interested in the design... They are cartridge type filter Napa part # 3210 for 10 micron...

If it was more fun everyone would be doing it!

Ron, I am pretty sure you are right. Even though there is more coolant than oil, the viscosity of the oil is much different than the coolant. The coolant should heat up first. Remember, the thermostat will keep the coolant stationary until it opens up. Most people with gauges say 5-10 minutes more to get the oil to temp after the coolant is at temp. The coolant "oil coolers" are used to get the oil up to temp faster by having more direct connection to the oil. The coolant would get to temp faster, but the oil would get hotter than the coolant, since it doesn't have a temperature controller, just a pressure controller.

This is not quite right. Most vehicle heater systems (which we vegos tap into, do not circulate thru the thermostat but bypass it. Heating in the heater circuit and therefore the vege oil heating circuit occurs at the same rate as the coolant in the block, whereas the thermostat only opens to let coolant into the radiator once it reaches its opening temp. specified by the engine manufacturer. The davco 234 is a very expensive filter but well worth the money. The 12v heater in the 234 is a heater/thermocoupler combo, there are two different models, one for bioD shutting off at 60* and one for SVO shuting off at 110*F. It draws 12.5 amps and the element is in the bottom of the fuel chamber with a coolant radiator. These heaters being in dirrect contact with the fuel and located in the bottom of the fuel chamber seem to make the most sense. If You have the extra space I suggest the davco384 it is about $100 more than the 234. It uses the same fillter as the 234plus but has a much larger oil chamber. It has thermostat on the coolant inlet that shuts off at 90* but can be disabled for constant flow. The 12v heater is seperate from the thermo coupler and draws 18.5amps. Since the 12v heater and the thermo coupler are seperate the thermocoupler can be bypassed for constant duty. In addition to the unmatched heating ability of this fillter, it's fillter changes are quick, easy, and CLEAN. If you have the space and the money this is the filter you want. Davco has alot of info at there sight www.davcotec.com/fp384.htm

One small note, although these filters are desiged for use with B100 and SVO the Warrenty on these filters only covers B20.

Arctic Fox use to make a heated fillter that had a centurfuge on the bottom. Has anyone used on of these? Do you know where to get them?

4. As far as the heater goes, the thermostat is not capable of being changed since it is built into the heater and will automatically regulate itself. Depending on what heater he has here are the following on/off temperature cycles.
a. 100 Watt heater: On at 58˚F, off at 85˚F
b. 150 Watt heater: On at 42˚F, off at 75˚F

I used a davco 234 with electric heat and I wasn't pleased with it. I run TIH to the davco and the davco was losing heat. Oil entering the davco was hotter than leaving it (infared thermometer) by about 30 F
Keep in mind the infared was picking up the temp of the outside of the fuel line and the reading at the end of the TIH could have been off due to the hot coolant so close to where the tube exits the hose

I am going to wrap a secondary filter on my rig with an Artic Fox pad heater, using a big hose clamp to hold it. Probably wire it to a simple switch somewhere. Question- has anyone used the Artic Fox insulated hose wrap. Coolant hoses disapate heat the longer they go.

I have never used one but I just wonder how many square inches of surface area there is in the heat exchange in the head.

FWIW

I am working on a custom built cleanable filter
aluminum housing and top, stainless mesh filter. Will be heated in the center electrically (as opposed to the top) Will be internally temp controlled so as to not overheat becasue this baby will HEAT. Will have port for temp probe or pressure gauge.
Of course will be pricey, but will save on
filter replacement costs.
