This may be a dumb question but I couldn't find an answer to it by using the search.
With the cost of most heated filters costing $250, why not put a FPHE right in front of the filter? Omar sells them for $100 and that would save me at least $150 Or is the issue that the VO that stays in the filter between run times gets thick and you need to heat up the VO in the filter, because it appears that you just need hot VO for better viscosity running threw the filter. thx |

The VO in the filter needs to be heated, too, so you don't get a filter-full of cold VO injected into the engine.
1985 Mercedes 300D, sold, Heat exchanger and injector line heaters, all single tank. 1997 E300D Benz using 50% diesel, 50% VO single tank |

Thats what I figured. Is that also why some people dont like the method of wrapping the filter with the coolant lines because they claim its not actually heating the VO inside the filter core?

I just installed a Grease Kings coolant heated filter. Really nice piece and very unusual design. It has the coolant plumbed inside the cannister that the filter goes in so it is basically wrapped around the filter itself. The greatest thing about the filter is that you can change out the element without having to re-prime the system. It has a removable top and you simply pull the element out from the top leaving the fuel in the cannister. The filter element stays in with one screw. It heats the fuel really well, so far I am impressed.

I use an A2 VW engine oil cooler, machine the outside of a nut to use as an adaptor, then screw on a 10 micron hydraulic oil filter. I'm sure someone has done this on a previous thread, but if not I can try and post a picture. Phil

Okay Evangelos, I'm attaching some pics. Using a 3/4" NF 'long nut' off a cylinder head stud, I screw it on the stud, and turn most of it to .995". Then I cut a 1" x 12 NF thread on it for the filter. A 12 TPI die would probably work too. I leave my split nut engaged and reverse the feed as I have an old lathe. Use any 1985 to 1997 VW engine oil cooler and get the adaptor with it, also the gasket if good.
Use the standard hydraulic filter that is 10 micron available at any hydraulic shop. Drill out one of the ports on the top of the adaptor for a 1/4" NPT thread. On the side there is no port so drill into the side of the adaptor, then thread with the same tap, but you will have to use a long nipple here. Degrease the old gasket. Or get a new one, along with the upper cooler seal(o-ring). I use Locktite 515 anerobic sealer on the gasket after making a mounting plate for the adaptor. Make sure the 1/4" plate is nice and flat and clean before you bolt the adaptor on it. Phil oil_cooler_1.JPG (41 KB, 66 downloads) pic 1 |

fyi It has been a while however I think this balwin 797 filter will fit the thread on the vw oil cooler and I think you can get it in a 3 or 10 mic. filter Omar www.omarsales.com |
