I have an 84 300sd that I have been running on a two tank system for several years. The wvo line runs under the car. Does anyone have a fuel line route from the trunk that runs thru the car, or does not protrude under the car?

Thanks

I orginally had TiH running under my 84 300SD. Last spring I switched to HoH and ran it through the car. It actually was pretty easy.

The coolant hoses and fuel line go from the engine around the fuse box and through the firewall with the rest of the electrical lines.
(Note: Each line goes seperate and they are not bundled at this point)

Then they come down to the left of the brake pedal against the foot wall and go underneath the carpet on the left side. There are some cables and cords there with a protective plastic cover. I took the plastic cover out. The hoses fit nicely under the carpet pad.

Then I took the driver's seat out of the car. There is a hole on the left side at the front where the seat mounts that these electrical/vacuum lines pass through. I ran the hoses through them.

Then I continued them under the seat.

Next I took the back seat out. There is another hole where the cords pass under the back seat. The hoses went through them.

Then I ran them up behind the backrest and underneath the carpet by the rear speakers into the trunk.

I did no cutting of sheet metal to the car. It works great.

I highly doubt this would work with TiH. Only with HoH.

My main motivation was to avoid having the fuel/coolant lines bottom out. I'm glad I did because I took the car to a state forest for deer hunting this past weekend and it bottomed out several times.

Thanks for the input. TIH? tube in hose? I am in cold Manitoba and need all the heat I can transfer so I am using TIH as far as I can.

Anybody with a TIH/HIH route?

I personally wouldn't use anything but hoh and I'm from Manitoba as well. HOH down the drivers side {inside} and everything insulated like crazy will work. I also installed an 88 celcius thermostat instead of the 80. Been tinkering for 3 winters now. Every vehicle and drop in temp is definately a challenge. Benz replaced the Jetta so we'll see how that goes.

It's not like I'm in a tropical climate. I live in Minnesota. We are already in the 20s F for a low and a high for the day. Last year we saw -20s F.

If you want to run it through the cab with TiH (yes tube in hose) you will need to do some cutting of the firewalls and interior and plan on having the hoses exposed. It is very difficult to make the sharp bends necessary to run it through the cab with TiH.

If you use a FPHE then TiH is overkill if you have a good system. HoH will work. I decided to switch since TiH has too many downfalls and not enough of an upside. I can't think of his handle off the top of my head, but Jake Palmer is his name and he lives in Canada and only uses HoH. Do some searching. He has his own website where he details his conversions.

In my opinion your options are-
1-Stick with TiH and keep it outside the cab
2-Switch to HoH and run it inside the cab

Thanks guys.

With the HoH what are you using for additional heat?

FPHE and a vegherm with 3 hydraforce valves and everything as compact and well insulated as possible. Tried the homemade heat exchangers and the glow plug heaters but found them to be a waste of time for our climate. Winter is on it's way, although it's 3 celcius today!

If its 3 celcius there, then I got you beat! It didn't get over 1.5 C here today.

I use a 26 plate FPHE as my final thing to bring the oil up to temp. I have a coolant line wrapped filter and aluminum tubing coil in the tank.

So what kind of temps are you seeing prior to the IP in -30c weather on the highway?

Is a fphe worth the money?

cross from Bend OR.
First Long Trip

2600 miles 127gal. of Wvo 20gal. of diesel and one fuel filter. I took the Dodge from Bend, OR to Denver to pick up my new truck camper and then visited some friends. I left Bend and drove all day and stopped at a truck stop at around 3am in central WY. I passed out in the cab for a few hours. It was cold (about -15). I woke up and the truck started but it ran rough for the first few minutes. For the next hour I could not switch over to WVO. I could hardly get any heat in the cab for that matter. The news said it was anywhere from 10 to 20 below zero not including a wind chill. I stopped and made a home made winter front from cardboard and this helped a ton (although I thought I might lose a couple fingers in doing so.) I switched right over to VO and ran at temps of 150-155. These are about 10-15 deg colder than normal highway temps for me but still just fine. I made it to Denver in the morning dropped on the camper and was on my way to Loveland Pass for some Snowboarding. Above 9000ft I saw a slight loss in power on VO versus diesel. I don't ever notice it any other times though. The next morning it was very cold again. I put my camping stove under the engine bay for about 20 min. The truck started right up without even cycling the grid heater. I know some may not approve of this method but without a plug in or a webasto it's what I had to work with. I traveled to Park city for a couple of day's. When starting after a couple of day's sitting I tried something that Jeff on this board had brought up. In my new camper I have two Trojan deep cycle batteries and a inverter. I pluged the block heater into this and let it go for an hour. The truck started right up and off I went home. On the Oregon boarder I plugged a filter but since I was down to empty I switched to diesel and cruised into town.
I learned a lot about cold weather VO use on this trip. Had a lot off fun. Sorry about the rambling post but if someone learns something it's worth it.

Heat Exchager any Problems?

Any problems with your Heat Exchanger? How was the powder at Loveland Pass? Sounds like another veggie adventure! O

Omar the HE saved my butt in WY. No problems with it except a little coolant leak at one of the fittings. I snugged it down some more and it's gone. The powder was OK but the boarding was still great. I did a full moon ski with a bunch of folks who just showed up where I was camping.
New2, I have a 55gal tank that takes up 11 inches of bed space. My camper is hanging out onto the tailgate 10 inches. I'm going to build a 45gal spare tire tank in the next month.
Shawn

anyway have fun
