Diesel to veggie, that’s the plan here at Oostburg High School, were Mr. Bauman’s Intro to Tech class of 18 kids are turning a 1981 Mercedes Benz 300TDT, that runs on Diesel fuel, into a veggie-oil ran vehicle. Were all excited but we still have some questions and concerns, so if anyone can help we will be continuing to post and check up daily, so please check back with use, it would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I converted my father's 300sd 2 years ago. You may find the info useful:

My personal opinion is that HiH can be risky, and more so if it's routed outside. With the availability of good, inexpensive heat exchangers nowadays, HoH is sufficient, easier and doesn't have the risk of contaminating fuel with coolant.

Hi Pat,
I was looking at your pics... very nice install... but I do have a suggestion... I noticed that you didn't use silicone on the exposed portions of the insulation... If you don't apply some RTV / silicone over time the vibrations from the engine will fray the insulation and your heater may short out...

If it was more fun everyone would be doing it!

Hey! We are part of the Oostburg High School veggie car program. We just finished re-plumbing the fuel lines and we are about to start the coolant lines but we aren't exactly sure what type of material to use for the fittings. So if any of you would like to help us out that would be great!!

Should get the schools audio visual classes or computer classes to document the veggie project that way more people from different areas of school get involved and its more supportable by school admin, if they ever say anything.

Since this is an adventure in education I encourage ya'll to jump in and go. Make Plans, ask us for advice about your plans and suggestions about hands one stuff not found in books. etc. Please do not ask us to spoon feed you. You will learn to little that way.

Members here.. DONT FEED THE BEARS LOL. guide these guys but dont do the work for them. Omar..... understand? teach them to surf (search) and they can feed their minds for a life time.

Now all that being said. Couple hints for you.

PRE TEST / PRE TEST / PRE TEST!!! KNOW THE CAR, temps it runs at, What the compression readings are, what the injectors look like, how good the cooling system opperates, record it all!!! for comparision to post test.

1. The car you are converting is one of the best there is to convert.

2. Cause of this there is LOTS of information about converting a vehicle with this engine in it. Learn the engine model number!

3. Bunch of this is actually on this board already. Seek and you will find. The first place to start is the top three threads of this board. My applogies about the mangled DIY/FAQ thread but it will still lead you to good places.

4. Be aware of the air bleed atop the OEM fuel filter. Not the inline one. There is much discussion in here on what to do about the air delema's you can get into if you don't deal with that banjo bolt properly. There is more than one solution. Read up on it. Present a plan to us and we will advise you if you need so.

5. Become one with the search feature! Remember often your search finds not the answers but the term(s) to use in your next search

6. The car conversion is only 1/3rd of the game. Your collection, filter and dewater system is the other 2/3rds with the dewater being the biggest.

7. Best source IMHO to do searches and ask questions about your car is: http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/forumdisplay.php?f=15

ATTACK CHARGE GO FORTH. Your on a grand adventure.

PS. yes, I'm a trained educator.

PS. there is another whole years worth of teaching available on this rig after your done. Do a search in here on using glow plugs as sensors to evaluate quality of engine combustion. Could EASILY be something to do in conjunction with the science classes and math classes!

AIR in the system ... get a site glass and temp gauge before the Injection Pump

use a sight glass that has meatal hose fittings... do not us the plastic screw in type they will crack (I ran one for about 5k before the plastic ends cracked in half)
http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?Ntt=fuel+filt...target=egnsearch.asp
You can buy the sight glass here or Autozone has them for about $10.
do not over tighten the glass itself it can crack .. (I have done that too) however make sure it is not leaking air some times they vibrate loose just enought for a small leak so check for drips ... good luck Omar

Greetings, this is peter from Oostburg and I am running the HIH for the veggie fuel lines. My plan at the time is to follow the diesel fuel lines running out of the engine and following them to the rear axle and going under the A frame and running the HIH over to the center of the car where the tank will be located I was wondering if I should run the hose a different way then I am planning?
