Hell all,
I just had my 96 Passat wagon converted last week with a Greasecar system. Since its conversion, I notice that the car is sometimes hard to start in the mornings like the battery is being drained somehow or else the car is out of gas.
Once the car is warmed up, it has no trouble restarting. This trouble occurs only in the morning which makes me think the battery is being drained slowly overnight somehow. Yesterday, I drove from Clearwater Beach, Florida to Hilliard, Georgia with no trouble, but in the morning, the car again took a few minutes to start.
I'm now in Waynesboro, Georgia for the night and have taken off the battery terminal to see if the car will start up easily in the morning. I drove the last fifteen miles on diesel so I don't think the fuel is any problem.
I'd like to figure out what is going on as I will be heading out to the mountains of North Carolina on Monday. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A drain on the battery or a bad battery is easy to check, and it would crank slower.

Another thing to check is for air leaks using a clear section of hose or an inline filter.

Another thing which could cause this is if you aren't purging completely and there is still some VO left in there at cold startup.

If your car has glow plugs maybe they are not as they should be and you may not be purging long enough to get all the veg out of your system which makes the thing harder to start.

A friend had this problem very recently and a change of Glow plugs made a world of difference.

Update,
Last night at 8 pm I took off the positive terminal connection to my battery. I just reconnected it this morning (7:30), and the car started right up. I heard a little sizzle as I placed the connector back on the terminal which made me think that the juice was still on somewhere even though the car was not turned on.
Are the glow plugs somehow connected to the battery as well? Also, I will be in the mountains of North Carolina for a week starting tomorrow; the cooler weather (dipping into the 60s) shouldn't be a problem for the weak glow plug(s), should it?

Your vehicle has an electrical load in the system that's draining the battery when the ign is off. Pull the fuses one at a time to see which one stops the sparks when you connect the battery lead. That will tell you which circuit has the problem. Start with the fuses that feed the veg conversion recently added.

A spark connecting the battery lead could be normal for that year of vehicle, there are things like the radio, keyless entry, alarm, car's computer, etc. that can draw some power even when off.

Is it cranking slower than usual when its hard to start?

You need to get an amp meter and see how much current is being drawn to know if the drain is as Sun says and is from something that is supposed to be taking power or it is excessive.

If you find too much current is being drawn, You can then pull the fuses and measure across the terminals to see what circuit the draw is on. I'm betting its one you have tapped into with your conversion.

Is there an electric heater in your conversion? That would be the first place I'd look before doing anything else if you have one. Other thing may be Solenoid Change over valves if you have them. Pollacks Should switch then not draw any more current but other types may draw power all the time particularly if they have been wired to a circuit that is always hot rather than one that is switched with the ignition.

It's doubtful you have an outright short, you'd have probably had a fire by now.

Thanks, everyone, for all your comments; I'm now at a coffee shop in the Highlands, checking my email. I could get used to living here! Anyway, yesterday I drove it all on day on veggie, from Augusta to Franklin, North Carolina, and this morning it started right up as if the previous trouble happened to some other car.
