My family and I are planning on traveling for at least a year full time. We will convert our 6.0L diesel excursion (vegistroke unless I find out otherwise) to svo and tow a trailer.
I am trying to decide what type of process to use for collecting the oil. This seems like a simple setup: http://www.vegpower.com/order/prodpage.cfm?cat_selected...ected=361&startrow=1 http://www.vegpower.com/order/prodpage.cfm?cat_selected...ected=361&startrow=1 But will it cost me a fortune in filters and will it work well enough. Why is it so much less expensive than http://www.goldenfuelsystems.com/products_pumps.php this option: I had an idea today that we could get a "toy hauler' trailer that would have a ramp and place to put one or two 55 gallon drums on wheels. Have some sort of mobile unit I could simply wheel up to the grease trap and fill up. I have a biodiesel http://www.utahbiodieselsupply.com/washtankplans2.php wash tank with wheels already built: It has a heater mister and bubbler set up. Has anyone used a setup with a http://www.xyzworks.com/centrifuge.htm dieselcraft filter like this: Should I have one drum for collecting/filtering and one drum to pump the clean stuff into? Any suggestions would be great. Steve |

Thanks. By heated centrifuge you mean something like an inline heater with a dieselcraft centrifuge?
If you do a pan test for water first can you use one of those simple portable filter setups? |

If oil tests free of water, it can be used. Finding oil that is water free on the road is unlikely. It is difficult to find anywhere...
If that is what you are determined to do, you should build your own, it would be much cheaper. And don't bother with water blocking filters. If they do get into contact with water they can cause major problems, swelling bursting, passing chunks of crud. 1984 Volvo 240 Elsbett 1 tank/glow plugs/injector nozzles/FPHE/fuel filter heater system, block heater, ILH 20%Kero, 80%WVO winter blend |

Steve, My wife and I completed a 10 month 20,000 mi trip last May. ( www.veggievoyagers.blogspot.com )
We used an Acme juicer suspended inside a 6' step ladder, with two 5 gal coolers above and below to create a closed gravity drain system. See my posts on the Acme juicer thread. I don't know if www.simplecentrifuge.com has their turnkey unit available yet. Its much heavier, 50lbs vs 20, and more expensive, but probably more durable and less fuss. With our 220 a/hr battery bank and 1200 watt inverter we could process 25 gals in 4-5 hrs. This worked well for our slow average of 100 mi/day and meant processing every 4 days. In retrospect, a small 2000w Honda EU gas generator would have been more handy. I found it more efficient to check around back for quality and quantity before asking. Arby's was the only big chain with consistently good oil, comparable to Asian restraunts. Our average pickup was 25-30 gals. Cubbies and a portable battery/pump in a box were sometimes more handy than our 20' jumper cables, when we couldn't park next to the oil container. Good luck and adventure, Mike Ps I can't seem to post an attachment of our rig. |

If you are looking for a turnkey solution, scroll down on this page to see a much more compact and cheaper one. I don't know if it heats the oil (for de-watering), so that might need to be added to your set up.
