First Question From Me...
I want to get a 16 plate exchanger. My trunk tank will be heated. I have a Kamatsu fuel heater that I will also use. I'll be using the "hose-in-hose" set-up to get under the hood. Would it be best to install the exchanger after the fuel valves so it gets a big shot of heat before the injectors...or should I install it before the valves? I'm in STL and it gets cold in the winter!

I install my fphe (heat exchanger) before the valve and use a inline electric heater (glow plug inline heater or vegtherm type of inline heater 12v 15 amp.) before the ip... the electric inline heater keeps the wvo hot right before the ip ... just make sure you turn off the inline heater when you switch back to diesel! good luck Omar

Omar,

That's the heat exchanger you sold me for my bus. It's been in there for about a year and there are no air problems that I've noticed. After warmed up (20 minutes of driving) I still get steady temps ranging from 185-195F, but it's ready to switch over much earlier.

FYI everyone there has been a price increase on Flat Plate Heat Exchangers from the Manufacturer ...
I will share a quote from the email I received

Our president and general manager just went to Japan to
negotiate with the stainless steel supplier; the pricing is breaking the
record almost every single week, and our supplier is afraid of even giving
out quotes. Current material prices have increased enormously. Copper
increased nearly doubled since the beginning of this year, and nickel
price rose by 2.5 times as well, and nickel is one of the main elements
for stainless steels.

Have a good week Omar

anyone out there in NY? may want to read this
have a good weekend Omar

Major NY newspaper is doing a story for xmas with a "green xmas" theme. One of the shots they are looking for is a green car that could be converted to run off of vegetable oil. The shoot will take place in NYC. They are looking for something vintage. Preferably 70s or 80s. They want to be authentic as possible, so they need a car that could be converted that is in green in color. The car would not be driven, everything is fully insured, and the owner is paid for their time. Contact Chris at 212-929-3909 or e-mail at info@cooperclassiccars.com

Has anyone done any tests to see what kind of improvement in VO temps one might see after upgrading a 16 plate to the next size (24?).

As far as Omar's shipping goes. Just give it a little more time. The day my FPHE arrived, the USPS shipping status was identical to yours.

Yes...I and others have tested quite a few various sizes (both larger in dimension and more plates) to see what the effect is of greater surface area on VO temp.

Generally FPHE are only able to raise the the VO temp to around 20° cooler than the indicated (at the FPHE inlet) coolant temp.

Also generally...although more VO/coolant interface (through more or larger plates) will raise VO closer and closer to the same temp as the coolant exiting the FPHE there is a sharply diminishing return on the investment of larger FPHE.

And since the post IP temp of VO is usually not changed much by a FPHE that raises the pre-IP VO temp to over 150°F adding a larger FPHE may have no overall effect. How close to the coolant inlet temp is you VO outlet temp now?

On this Blog you'll be able to follow my progress on the conversion of a 1976 model W123 Mercedes to run on used cooking oil (UCO), or waste vegetable oil (WVO). I'll post stuff and upload some pics to show you how to do this yourself on your own vehicle Smile
