FPHE in Toyota truck. I agreed with welder's conclusion that perfectly vertical wasn't necessary, plus limited space led to a ~45° orientation. Hot coolant in at the bottom right, cold fuel in at the upper left. There were no problems purging air from the system.
The FPHE is connected between the fuel feed pump and the fuel filter and all connections are under a positive pressure of about 30PSI. This message has been edited. FPHE in Toyota truck with 2 layer Arctic insulating cover by
http://otterbaysuits.com/ The insulating covers reduce the warm-up time/distance by 25% to 30%. The two layer Arctic FPHE Cover is shown before installation in the next message. Here's one of Omar's 26 plate's on my 1993 Chevy 6.5. I used a heavy duty 5mm thick dirt bike inner tube to insulate it from vibrations and to keep heat in. It's attached to a steel plate with a large hose clamp. I also added 3/8" rubber cushions on the bottom.

Kirkh,
Where did you mount your heat exchanger on the 7.3L? I have mine horizontal on the frame rail and am only getting 120 - 130 F temps on VO. Thanks, Scott 2000 F250 7.3L Biodiesel 2006 Jetta TDI Biodiesel 4.5 kW Grid Interconnected Diesel Genset on WVO |

The truck is a modified system with a 203* thermostat, DP Tuner and flow through regulated return with a pressure regulator set at about 64 psi.
My coolant comes from the head to the insulated FPHE mounted down along the rail. The coolant then flows to a hot head filter and on to a tank in the bed with a homemade hot stick heater and returns to the pump side of the cab heater line. The lines are all insulated. The fuel flows from the heated pickup to the FASS pump, hot head filter and then to the FPHE. The system uses check valves and a DPDT fuel pump relay to switch between the stock pump/filter and the WVO pump and filter. These lines are also insulated. I do not have an accurate water temp guage on the truck, just the factory idiot guage. My fuel temp guage is located on the switching manifold where the two fuel systems are distributed to the head. I killed my IR temp gun in a vat of oil so I need to get a new one and start shooting temps. 2000 F250 7.3L Biodiesel 2006 Jetta TDI Biodiesel 4.5 kW Grid Interconnected Diesel Genset on WVO |

Your flat plate heat exchanger should be the first unit to have the coolant from the head ... then your heat exchanger in the wvo tank… heated wvo filter... you need to find out your coolant temp. Did you plumb your fphe with opposite flow? Just a thought Omar
You can get more heat out of your FPHE if you insulate it with some high density foam (recycle an old sleep bag mat) do your fuel lines also let us know what happens Omar www.omarsales.com |

The FPHE should have it's own coolant heating loop from the head to the FPHE and back to the pump inlet. All the other coolant heating devices can run off another coolant loop. Don't put the coolant heated devices in series; that will restrict the coolant flow through the FPHE.
