Sideways is not the best way to install a FPHE. But better to have the fuel ports on the upside than the coolant. Hopefully there is enough coolant flow to prevent a buildup of air in the top half of the FPHE in the coolant passages.

On this Blog you'll be able to follow my progress on the conversion of a 1976 model W123 Mercedes to run on unmodified vegetable oil (UVO), or waste vegetable oil (WVO). I'll post stuff and upload some pics to show you how to do this yourself on your own vehicle Smile

Does anyone know the name for the role of steel used to bend around the FPHE shown at the post above?

Sounds daft but cant find anything on ebay -

Cheers,

David

Edit: sorry, just realised the photo does not display from the quoted post but it does appear in quite a few others.

Thanks Coach, will take a look -

Heres a couple of pic's of heated filter together with FPHE, looks kinda small compared to the 20/30 plate jobbies but this is custom made a really kicks out the heat.

After testing I moved everything together as close to the IP feed as poss to avoid loss of heat.

With both of the above achieve mid 70c at the Pollak feed.

Cheers,

David

Quick Question,
I just ordered a FPHE from Omar and have been researching how to plumb it in. I am running a stock Greasecar on a 2000 Jetta TDI. I am thinking about putting it in parallel to the heated filter. I think that would give the lowest resistance. How much resistance does a FPHE have? If I do it that way will the majority of the coolant go simply to the filter side and avoid the FPHE. Since it is a Jetta with a tight engine compartment I would like to avoid an extra ball valve if possible. What's everyone thinking?

The FPHE will probably be less restrictive than the rest of the GC coolant plumbing. But it will remove a lot of heat from the coolant before it gets to the rest of the system.

Normally I suggest a seperate parallel loop for the FPHE with a balancing valve. These are avaialable in fairly compact form. For more info on this look at: http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/voconversionbasics/vpost?id=2273794 The bottom schematic may be the best option though you might want to fine tune the second loop using a hose clamp or heavy ziptie.

Another question. Now that I know how to plumb it what size hoses does the GC system use. I thought it would be good to match their size. Also any thoughts on where I could get these additional coolant hoses to make the plumbing work?

Rather then reinventing the wheel I'm going to ask another question. Does anyone have any wise words on where and how to mount a FPHE on a 2000 Jetta TDI with a stock Greasecar? I'm sure people have done it before. If anyone could pass some pics my way that would be great. Thanks!

Is this heat exchanger different than the one i can buy at my local plumbing wholesaler? I looks identical and both are copper. Is this unit manufactured just for wvo or is it just a standard heat exchanger?

Hello Folks. Since everyone here was so helpful I thought I would give back. Here is a pic of my setup in case anyone else is need of placement ideas for FPHE in a Jetta w/ Stock Greasecar system. I put it right next to the heated filter which worked surprisingly well. Coolant goes down and out, wvo goes up and out. Temps are running 180ish after IP after 10 min. They used to be 130 after 1/2 hour. Thanks for everyone's help!
