I've had a centrifuge system years back and found it to be ok. I used it for used motor oil and although it took a lot of the sludge out, it was still not enough to not coat my injector tips with carbon. Maybe it wasn't the filtration... but I will say it still looked black after the CF.
I've read a while back that upflow filtration is the new best way. Is this still the case?

There really a best simple method. To a large degree it is a matter of time and the available space you have.
If you are talking about just pouring it in at one end and getting a decent product at the outlet with no other immediate effort an upflow filtration system is okay. At some point however work is needed to clean the set up of the crap that accumulates.
