Last week, I filtered oil through a 5 micron sock suspended over a large bin. The oil looked clean enough, but my car sputtered on the freeway and I had to get to the shoulder. Luckily I carry filters with me.

I'm new to WVO and haven't seen another setup before.

Synthetic sock filters can go way over their micron rating when just suspended. This is even more true if the VO being filtered is heated.

What kind of heated filter do you have on your car? What is the micron rating on its element. Are you dewatering your WVO thoroughly?

It runs fine now, but this problem occurred right after I dumped 5 gallons of WVO into the tank. I didn't let it settle long enough, because some sediment was at the bottom of the barrel in what's left of the batch that came from.

I myself would only use sock or bag filters in a gravity feed filtering setup with sock or bag being well supported and kept from stretching. My friend uses bags in a housing with pressure but he gets too much of thick creamy stuff coming through. In my gravity feed outfit a bedsheet layer goes above my descending layers of filter felt and it seems to get most of the creamy stuff along with any other crunchies. I may have some filter bags though. I was helping my friend pickup a diesel stepvan that was military surplus and the guy had a pallot of the long filters that Omar sells. He gave me a box of them since he had no use and didn't know what to do with them, they were just included in sale of stepvan. So I may cut them up in sections and use them for final filter in my gravity outfit.

It's a 1983 MB 300SD, filters were replaced little more than a thousand miles ago, has Elsbett one tank system with canister filter in a pre-heating element. Temp here is warm 80-90F, fuel tank not cleaned...so I expect the filters to clog frequently right after conversion.

However the car was running 50/50 w/o conversion before I bought it, so some of the junk from the tank should've been removed. Only chemical I've used so far is seafoam.

I know it was the improper settling of oil, only 3 days for this batch.

what does improper settleing have to do with it?

If you poured thru a 5 micron sock, the end stuff is 5 micron that you put into your tank.

If you settle for a year and pour thru a 5 micron sock, it's still 5 microns.

your sock will clog faster without settling, but either way, you are still only going to get 5 micron (nominal) on the other side.

Probably just regular filter clogging, just at an in-opportune time...
