Starting a few weeks ago I occasionally would hear a tapping that at times sounded like a rod knock. It would come and go with different levels of load and different engine speeds. It wouldn't always happen, and was rather cunning in avoiding my detection. It wouldn't happen when I let the car idle in park.

Finally I figured out what it was. It was the rubber mounts that hold on the air cleaner. The rubber was sheared on two of them. So I went to Diesel Giant to order a set since I remembered seeing them there before. However nearly 20 bucks for the set seemed high for three little pieces of rubber. I checked out RockAuto.com and got them shipped to my house for half of what Diesel Giant wanted. They're only 1.53 a piece plus shipping.

So if you think you have some wierd noises going on, check the mounts, and shop around for a good price.

Check also the tee mount.I had to weld metal on mine, which stopped the rubbers from breaking.
