I have an aluminum tank and would like to use a glow plug to preheat the oil in the tank before sending it to the IP. How do I hookup the glow plug? Timers? resisters etc. I'm using a plastic boat tank right now but in the winter I'm not able to go on SVO if it gets below freezing. I am using 3 in 1 hose right now and in the summer everything works fine. Any help would appreciated!!! Big Grin Big Grin

You will be much happier with a coolant based heater. Pretty much everyone offers one. I have a hotfox from plantdrive that works well. John and Dana also offer tank heaters/heated pickups. I'd say try one of those three and you're going to be miles ahead of where you'd be with a glow plug heater.

Good luck.

DON"T USE A GLOWPLUG! They are not designed for what you are trying to do, and they will get way too hot and burn out, if kept on long enough to significantly heat the oil. As Charlie_M says, use a coolant based heater.

Thanks for the information. I haven't been on here much lately and the glow plug was the "hot" thing way back when. Thanks again!! Has anybody used the vegtherm kit or just the tube? I'm using this in a 1986 Isuzu Trooper without the turbo.

I agree that a glowplug heater is inaapropriate for this application..but not becasue they will burn out. If you use the right model they will not. But unless you are very clever at fabricating a safety deveice they do present a fire hazard if used as a tank heater.

I have used 12v pad and strip heaters for this purpose..but frankly except in a few limited circumstances coolant heated fuel puckups are cheaper, safer , and work better.

What vehicle/application are you working on?
