I am thinking of selling wvo but before I invest in a 'plant' I wanted to get a feel for what people would pay.
It would be dewatered and filtered to 5 microns.
Would you pay $.75 to 1.00/gallon?

Are you planning on that price including tax?

I would pay 75 cents a gal, if it was non-hydrogenated.

My guess is that the market would probably bear $1/gal + road taxes. I think that would still be below $1.50/gallon (chances are reasonable someone will corect me if I'm wrong about the tax amount...).

Have you made an estimate of how many gallons per month you could move? The emount ou'd need to charge to make it profitable depends on this quite a bit. Probably ou get the VO itself almost free (actually it is free bu then yuo have costs associated with collection, transport, storage, energy to heat/dewater, filters, etc...) Those are minor hough.... I think the larger costs involved are mainly fixed costs. You'd need to move enough to cover those fixed costs (rent, pump, registration fees, etc...) before you clear a profit.

I talked w/ a rendering company and they will sell me unfiltered oil for $0.25/gal...they say they have around 100K gallons per month.

I am working on a centrifuge for the majority of the filtering although the final filtering will be thru an actual filter.

I thought dewatering would be the easy part but it seems harder (more energy intensive) than filtering when large volumes are involved.

Taxes are left out of the equation...If this is a go I will look into alternative fuel tax breaks but I have not done any research on the tax side.
I wonder if it will make a diff if I sold it as filtered non food grade recycled oil...not my business what the buyer does w/ it...like run a car.
As for type of oil...I do not think I will be able to keep hydrogenated oil out of the mix. I will be testing and labeling titration results w/ each batch.

I'd hate to say this, but I personally wouldn't buy WVO. That's simply because my VW gets 40mpg and I don't go through WVO that fast. I fill up about once a month, so filtering and settling once a month isn't a big deal for me. Now if I had a Powerstroke or something that sucked fuel and had to maintain 2-3 55gal drums in the garage then I would start forking over..

Thanks,

I'd pay a dollar. delivery included.

Though your argument is very clever, I don't think it will lead to the results you desire. gandhi

Personally I would not pay anything. I am getting a Dodge 2500 and don't mind taking a few minutes per month to stop paying for fuel. That being said, there are probably plenty of people who would pay.

In reality, selling WVO wouldn't hold out. If it did GM, FORD, ect would've already made WVO cars stock.

I would focus your efforts at starting a co-op.

I would think that if you were doing fleet conversions for a school, company, ect... then you would have a market as they wouldn't want the mess and hassle of collecting and filter. As far as the public goes, my feeling is that most people into the WVO do it for a number of reasons, biggest one is we are mostly DIYer's and get one hell of a kick out of providing our own fuel. I know I do, better than half the fun is filtering and fueling up in my own garage

right on ralph.

I run my own company.... I do alt fuels to get an edge overall.
I would still filter my own, but it sure would be nice to pick up 3-4hundred gallons extra when I get really busy.

there have been several times this last month, where I could stay home and save $40 on fuel by filtering, or I could go out and make $600-700 that day by going out to a jobsite.

easy choice eh?
I'd pay:
$1-$1.5 per gal, filtered dewatered
$.50-$.75 a gal raw WVO
and for clean fuel free of road taxes, I'd consider anything under the current diesel prices.
