I searched Dodge Ram and didn't have any luck with results. I've been making Biodiesel for 1 year and currently I'm researching a SVO kit from greasecar for my 2005 Dodge Ram. Are there any concerns I should have with running SVO in this truck? What other companies should I consider with this truck? Is a 6cyl 24V Cummins Turbo Diesel a good candidate for SVO? I've recently moved 30 miles from my job and SVO seems to be the better choice for me. Thank you

Many of them ask and answer your same question.

I asked the same question when i was considering svo. so here's what i learned. The 12 valve cummins is much better than the 24 valve. I think it is the ip that doesn't tolerate Veggie on the 24 valves. ppl say that biodiesel works good in the 24 valves.

I have been thinking about upgrading to a newer truck some day here in the future and I have wondered about what would be a good truck also for WVO. I know of the problems with the 98.5 - 2002 Dodges and the VP injection pumps. I wonder if the 2003-2005 Dodges are more suitable for WVO then the earlier 24 valves? I know vegistroke now makes a kit for those years that is similar to the one they use for the powerstroke and apparently can be installed in 5 hours. I would not mind a 12 valve cummins but with each passing year they become harder to find, especially with lower miles. I know the engine is strong on those trucks but like anything things break and it becomes more likely as they age, even in a 15 year old truck. Which is what steers me to the 2003-2005 cummins. I know the "what is the best truck to convert" question gets asked every other week, but I am still not sure what IS the best truck to convert beside the 12 valve cummins. Among the newer diesels I would stay away from anything but a 7.3 liter ford, and any duramax. that does not leave many options. I guess as time goes on and more people convert the newer 2003- 2005 dodge cummins I will see if it is worthy of conversion.

The 1994-1998 Dodge/Cummins is in my opinion the best diesel truck ever made. The IP is an inline bosch IP, the engine is mechanical as is the lift pump and you can double the horsepower for a few hundred dollars.

The 98-02 24 valves are good engines but are electronically controlled and the VP44 injection pump does not care for low fuel pressure at all. www.frybrid.com/vp44.htm explains why, that said I have converted dozens with no issues.

The Ford 7.3 in all its incarnations (non-turbo, turbo, early PSD and 99 and up PSD) are all very good conversions and strong motors. The Duramax is not my favorite enbgine and one of the few I will not design a system for.

See http://www.frybrid.com/1998%2059.htm to have a look at my 1998 complete with dump bed.

Vegistroke just started a system for the 2003 and 2004 Dodges, not for the VP44 vehicles.

So is the 7.3 powerstroke a better SVO truck then 03/04 dodge? The prices on 03/04 dodges are starting to come down to near the price of a 12 valve.

The 03/04 dodge is a great engine, it is the same Bosch HPCR injection system that is used from 03 to present on the Cummins and Mercedes motors.

Depends on what you want the truck for, the best bang for the buck is still the late 80's early 90's Fords becasue you can find one under $3K, next is probably the 94-98 Dodge.

Well I currently have an early 90's Ford that is a pretty big POS but it runs. In the near future I will be able to upgrade to a much nicer truck. I like the cummins but I wonder about the reliability of 03/04 on SVO. I know the 12 valve ones are the best candidate for a conversion but as time goes by, finding one in good condition and with low miles is getting harder and harder to find. And like any 10/15 year old truck, things begin to break besides the motor. I am wondering what is a better truck for SVO an 03/04 Cummins or a 7.3 liter powerstroke? The cummins are starting to come down and approach the price of a decent condition 12 valve with the same miles and they come in a crew cab.
