A long shot but on the older VW's system, the fuel could drain out of the rotary Bosch pump, back to the tank, causing hard starting after sitting overnight. The test was to park the car down a steep hill overnight and see how it started the next day. Unlikely it's your problem, but...Phil

Going with what VW cat mentioned, I have a pressure / vacuum gauge on the common fuel line and it always shows a slight vacuum after being purged and parked awhile. One time it read zero pressure and sure enough, there was a loose clamp and air in the system. The tank on my truck is the lowest point in the fuel system so it makes sense that the fuel is trying to drain back into it.

I'd second VW cat's observation.
