What I learned.
Tried 12 gague wire and updated to 10 gague and it helped.
Sunwizard said it was passing to much oil and recommended pullys. Like you I like the simplicity of direct couple. My bypass is 1/2 inch. toasted my harbor freight 1/2 hp motor.
Need to run the heat on a different circuit. That helped my situation. The key was using the internal pump bypass. I pulled the pin securing the bypass spring and threaded the hole, reinstalled the spring and it appears that the internal bypass relieves the pressure so that you are no longer passing 10 gpm. My motor stopped overheating. Dang thing leaks and I have not solved that issue yet. It was a combination. Correct gague wire, not other load on the line, run on 220v. reduce load by using internal SBC bypass.

all good ideas, thanks for posting them...
I think I'll be ok with the 3/4hp for now.
I just need to get the dimmer so I can adjust flow. Screw pulleys. This thing is flying too, the rpms are pretty high. I don't even want pulleys in the mix. If a belt came off , it would most definitely take out one of the hoses too. I like the ability to turn the dimmer up to max for sucking (through a paint gun strainer currently)
I don't see any point in changing wire, 14 gauge is easily rated for 15 amps, and this thing is only 11. It might help with the overheating , but what will help the MOST is not running it WOT / full speed at all times.
That should increase the life of the motor substantially. Truth be told I would have done a 1 hp harbor freight with the dimmer, knowing what I know now. No big deal though... I don't want to use this thing for sucking forever just until I make some more transfer pumps.
I do not want to use the SBC pump bypass. I want to build quite a few of them , and I want them all the same.
I gotta admit though when I make some SBC oil transfer pumps for 12volt motors , it might make good sense to keep the bypass then so the motor doesn't burn up when the sucker gets plugged. But thats on the intake side, not the pressure side for a sucker overheating...

That's the thing I don't get - How do you keep the strainer from not constantly plugging? What do the render's use, a monster strainer?

The truck I saw in College Staiton did not have any strainer. It was a giant vacuume. Just suckedup everything.

yah those are 'waste pumps' i believe (air diaphram). My buddy is working on one, but has noticed he needs some serious CFM from his onboard air supply to run the damn thing. (like 8hp gas compressor or more)
I'll have to see if that will work, but it sure as hell won't with a SBC gear pump. I believe anything over 100 mesh would tear it up pretty quick. Think about it , engine oil is filtered constantly. While they are gear pumps, they aren't invincible. they do have incredible suction at full tilt (1700 rpm ish)

i picked up a hydraulic gear pump similar to this one:

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/p..._200329714_200329714

it is very quiet, and perfect flow, i got it coupled to a 1/2 hp motor, doesnt even have to work, got centrifuge hooked up to it, similar to a oc20 dieselcraft, i got a filterfuge, even with it spinning along at 90 psi and 140*f i need a little bypass but it is very quiet, from all the utube videos ive seen i know they are all very noisy, and it was when i was using one of those teel pumps, but the shaftseal started to leak so i looked for an alternative, the best part is, these pumps are designed for much more pressure, so the seal is not stressed and should last forever. overal for me it was cheaper than the teel pump., soon i will post a video and pictures of it runnin, i would recommend this typ of setup to anyone. just my 3 cents ( the canadian doller whent down again)

about 20.000 kms on oil.
