I have some large funnels with gauze in the bottem. A layer of cotton wool goes over this, then sand. Top it up with veg oil, leave overnight and let gravity do the rest. I collect into 20l containers and even the dregs are fine. However, as the sand clogs, it gets slower so you need to replace the filter after about 50-60 litres. I've moved the set up into my attic just for space - great fun balancing buckets of oil up the ladder. No mishaps yet.

We manufacturer filter bags so I will through in my two cents. A Two stage filteration (A bag in side a bag) speeds up your filteration and the bags last longer. Long time users tell me like to do 50, 10 and and 1 micron or 25 and 1 micron. Yes the bags stretch but you are dealing with nomial rating (Nomial= not exact number a 10 could effecitively be 20 or 5 micron). If ten is were you want to filter to over shoting it is a good idea to be safe. Depending on the bag a 1 micron could be 10 plus microns.

When the bags stretch the micron rating will decrease change a 1 will be come a 10 and so on. So save our old bags and use them as prefilters before you put the WVO into the new bag.

Also depending on the bag material some wash better then others. I recommend turning most bags inside out and hosing them off. Scrubbing is not a good idea.

I assuming this question is directed at me. We make them out of polyproplene because:
1) temperature and chemical resistant.
2) natural anti bacterial properties.
3) easy to work with from a manufacturer view
4) strenght of the material

Anyone come up with any designs for their Sand filter? What do you do with the dirty sand?
