6 different views of my new veggie filter. I had this made at a local fab shop with ports for temp and vaccum gage. in my conversion I have the diesel run through the lid also so there is no chance of cold oil in the ip
go to link above and click on "pictures" on left
click each pic to enlarge and get description.
let me know what you think.
I have the first version on my truck (only has one port in lid, everthing else is done with pipe fittings, and no drain) This one is going to go on my other truck with the improvements.
I ordered 4 --- 1 for me, 1 for a friends benz, 1 for my food service salesman's benz, and one for another ford (this guy fell through)
fabricator made the one in the pics "just to have kicking around" and decided to powdercoat the canister and polish the lid.

I got it made for about what it would cost to buy one but I got to incorporate many features I wanted and couldn't find.

patcarr,
We never drew up any plans, just discussed what I wanted and he built it. Were rednecks, plans are like instructions, who needs 'em LOL

John,
Yes it does work like a champ, but as Ralph stated, it is expensive to get made as I don't have the equipment to make it myself. It does however eliminate all the tee fittings for gauges and I am going to spend even more $$$ on AN fittings and SS braided fuel line from the diesel filter to this and from this to the IP. Will look super nice and eliminate possible leaks in the future from all the little connections and hose barbs with clamps. It will be a little while till I get the final setup done as I now have to save up for the SS line. At this time I'll post pics of the final install. I am using the same filter currently minus the powdercoat and polish, I am currently getting around 155 on my oil and I can't get the truck to heat past 163 on the coolant. I have check the temps several times with infared. These numbers posted were at the same time at 28 degrees outside temp and are both the highest I have acheived. If I can get the engine to heat properly I may have to shorten my HIH as I was running 114 into the filter when I took these readings.

Looks good.
Be careful to examine the filter element used, I have played witha lot of filter elements and have found that many fuel filters are designed to filter cool fuel and the filter media is glued to the plated on the top and bottom, when 160F oil is passed through them the glue breaks down and the filter bypasses at the point of failure. I have seen this in particular with Racor drop in elements. Look at the base of the filter where the media meets the bottom plate (on top as well) and if you see a line of glue it would be worth your time to heat some oil in a pan ** to 180F and drop the element in it for a few hours before building a filter around an element which will fail.

I don't know anything about the goldenrod unit but have been looking into using drop in oil filter elements as they are rated to at least 350F and much higher pressure. I simply have not gotten around to testing them yet, while the temp rating may be OK I do not know how thye will react to VO, oil and diesel are fine in some lines that VO cause to swell in no time.... Test, test, test.

**When heating oil on the stove remember to be safe, keep an extinguisher handy, etc, etc. I know of at least 2 alt fuel related fires in the last year.

cgoodwin,
Thanks, the reason I build around this filter is because I have used it successfully for over a year and nearly 45,000 miles with 180 F oil
I have been at every parts store in my area and they all claim to have contacted the manufacture of the filter elements, were told they won't take the heat.
I have found that the Napa filters cannot stand the heat. they fall right apart.

BTW, the best part is this filter fits in a Benz with room to spare. I'll have pics of it in my friends benz by the end of the week
